Pros
market leading in many areas, innovative with TONS of potential for hard workers. Overall, this is a great company and improving each day. I wouldn't leave for one of the other big hotel companies unless I was 'forced' to.
Cons
Corporate offices are filled with MBA types that have no field experience. Sometimes it feels like they are pushing things into the field without thinking through how it will affect those of us working in the 'real world'. Starwood has grown really fast and they haven't figured out how to maximize the pipeline of talent in the field. They're getting there but still have room to improve!
Pros
A better understanding of what not to do at the next place you work.
Cons
Treated unfairly by management, hard to communicate to some of the managers who don't speak English . Scheduling problems when you put in a request 2 weeks a head and the manager still dose not work around it. Horrible communication. Managers don't help employees out when needed. They get mad at you when you ask for help or ask a question about something.
Advice to Senior Management
Better communication between managers and employees, better understanding if something happens like a thunderstorm when you have employees working outside. Professionalism training for managers due to unprofessionalism towards employees like me.
Pros
I think that the Starwood has good benefits as well as a good associate recognization program. Also I they promote hiring within.
Cons
I feel that managed properties are not held accountable for the associates' well being vs standards at owned properties unfourtnately.
Advice to Senior Management
I think that training associates and caring about their growth within the company is key for the development of the associate and the hotel as a whole.
Pros
Great benefits and great place to work. Can be stressful and tiring but it's worth it I guess
Cons
Working for star wood is long hours, managers work 10 hr shifts and work very hard.
Pros
Management Team & Front Office Team
Cons
Salary Level & Manpower arrangement
Advice to Senior Management
More communication with associates;More attractive benefits for associates!
Pros
Growth potential and internation job opportunities.
Cons
Huge corporation sometimes more chiefs than indians.
Pros
Management supported employees and provided them tools to perform well. All departments worked together, and communicated effectively. This created a work atmosphere that was positive and hard working.
Cons
Each brand's performance varies. My expereince was wonderful, but it could have been different at a different brand.
Pros
They expect a lot of you, but you get so much in return. The work environment is great, the comradery is amazing, everyone functions as a cohesive team, and the morale is sky-high. The opportunities that exist for each employee that is determined and works hard are endless. Just because you don't have a background in a particular field means nothing. If you have the desire, will, determination, and attitude, Starwood will help you find your place. There are no limits to what you can do. Most management positions, supervisory positions, and just about anything else that isn't straight-off entry-level sales, is all internal promotion. They hire from within (yes, they *really* do!). This is seriously one of the best places I've ever worked.
Cons
Like any company, there is some drama here and there. There is some level of questionable competence, and all of the other things that go with working for a large corporation. The levels of negative things are much, much lower than any company I've ever worked for, but they're still there. This isn't a con, but if you want to work for Starwood, it's imperative that you have a passion for working, and a desire to be the best. They help you find all of these things within you and help to foster them. They give a LOT, but they expect a LOT in return: be prepared to work your tail off!
Advice to Senior Management
Pay extremely close attention to your employees (moreso than you already do), and help to further foster, train, promote, and reward those who are naturally-talented (as well as those that work really, really hard) and are amazing at what they do. Some people progress faster than others (some, a LOT faster), and while everyone still has much to learn, letting those "superstars" sit is likely to cause them to move on to other companies and jobs. Take your talent and mold it; don't let the good ones get away.
Pros
When I worked for Starwood, the economy was good. A lot of people were hired at corporate in a short period of time - it was like a revolving door. Although it was quite unorganized, people had a tendency to roll up their sleeves to get the job done. It was fun when Barry was there. Lot's of great parties - great working atmosphere.
Cons
From what I hear now from current employees, Starwood just isn't the same. It has taken a beating from the economy and, as a result, morale took a huge hit.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't underestimate the power of good perks. Star HOT rates are fabulous, but also keep in mind that the other perks are important too - especially when the economy isn't at it's best.
Pros
Fun work environment, very good pay, decent opportunity for growth
Cons
Not good at recognizing achievements, very difficult clientle, easily throws away loved employees over simple issues
Advice to Senior Management
Applaud good work, and give valuable employees second chances
