    Pros

Travel benefits for employees are fantastic. Working for a visible brand is fun. Not much else here.

    Cons

Company is in turmoil at the corporate level. All animals are jumping off the ship in light of new unpopular leadership, and an expectation that the company will be sold off in the near term. Additionally, many difficult personalities at the corporate level: a "no a**hole" policy would be welcome, but would likely clean out what's left of headquarters. Unlikely to affect you if you're working in a property.

    Advice to Management

Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help. Help.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Good work life balance - Depending on the team, great individuals to work with - Recognize and reward top performers - Interesting office events

    Cons

    - No clear career advancement path - Non-competitive benefits - very expensive for medical! - Terrible HR department & HR solutions (very paper based): mistakes are the norm and the team is not responsive. You have to jump through hoops to get things like change of address taken care of.

    Advice to Management

Simplify the HR processes as it regards to onboarding and offboarding employees. Provide more competitive benefits and compensation

StarHot employee discount is a pretty good benefit. StarFriend discount is not great value.

    Cons

The Vice Presidents are small minded and self-serving at the expense of their people.

I have been working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts (More than a year)

    Pros

If you enjoy travel, there are a number of jobs in the company that require a fair amount of travel. All employees are given cell phones. The general work environment is relaxed and casual, and the majority of the people there are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

The company seems to be very top-heavy with management, especially middle management. Also, in the recent elimination of positions, they seemed to use the last in, first out method, rather than evaluating the quality and skill of the employees in each affected department. And of course, it isn't really fair that the on-the-line employees are the ones that pay the steepest price for failed policies and practices.

    Advice to Management

Don't eliminate so many of the workers while you retain so many managers, especially people managers. How do you expect to get anything accomplished if you lay off the people who do the actual work, while retaining people who simply can't do the job.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    No micromanagement; Freedom to be "innovative" in my job; Associates are listened to & employees are asked for honest input on a regular basis (and suggestions to improve DO become reality); extremely supportive Team; jovial and positive coworkers;

    Cons

Rather impossible to do what must be done in a 40 hour workweek. But the positive energy and recognition received is worth doing the extra hours

    Advice to Management

My Team is extremely fortunate to have one of the best leaders/directors I have ever worked with in all of my places of employment and am aware that not everyone at Starwood Corporate HQ has this. So as a general rule positive reinforcement works better than criticism. Let employees feel valued and give input/ideas. Continue to tell all of us that we all contribute and are important.

    Pros

Great benefits, work environment is fun and people are very friendly.

    Cons

Some of the managers are quick to point fingers when things go wrong and takes no responsibility for any of their actions.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, at times they are afraid to be fully honest on yearly maneger reviews because they think they will be punished or managers will find out that it was them who wrote the bad review.

I worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is above above market Good team atmosphere Good office location (Stamford, CT)

    Cons

Poor benefits that start in the 3rd month of employment Far behind in terms of technology - lack of systems is compensated for by headcount Very hierarchy based - hard to get anything done without getting a million approvals Crazy work hours in some departments

    Advice to Management

Loose the offices and make everything open space so everyone can work as a team. Invest more in technology before it becomes a huge problem.
