Pros
Huge company, lots of opportunities to network and interact with others. Nice campus and lots of programs for internal employees to be involved in.
Cons
Because company is so huge, it is easy to get lost. While the company has many benefits for it's employees, these are limited to the internal employees only. If you are an external (contracted employee) you do not get to take advantage of these perks and you also get much more work on your plate than internals. External employees also tend to get overlooked for many opportunities within the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees. Hire some new, younger employees or you are going to be in trouble in the near future when half of your company retires. Also, hold employees accountable, internal and otherwise, no work is getting done when your employees are up walking around all day. Embrace change!
Pros
fortune 500, privately held (no shareholders to answer to), TONS of job opportunities, flexability, pay, promotion opps, so many people you work with every day; the people in general are awesome
Cons
corporate is in a college town; great for family life, not so great if you're single;
Advice to Senior Management
keep getting feedback from employees, especially those in the call centers: they are the ones speaking directly with the customers and have a great feel for what is really happening with State Farm;
Pros
State Farm has excellent policies when it comes to sick/personal leave, development, and communication with management.
If you need a day off, and it is very common that you need some time to de-stress in claims, the option is readily available.
The company provides a pension for employees who work 5 years or more at the company.
Provides lots of training and development.
Claims has a multitude of shifts avalable starting between 7:00 AM to 10:45 AM, with 7 hour 45 minute shifts.
Cons
Claims is rough. Every call you take is someone on one of the worst days of their life. It can be very easy to get burnt out.
It can be very difficult to get recognized for a job well done, you have to be lucky enough to have a manager listening in on a 'remarkable' call to be acknowledged.
By the same token, if you make a mistake, it will come back to bite you, whether a manager hears you or not. The customer will complain, or more commonly, a co-worker will forward your mistake to your manager.
Advice to Senior Management
We understand that managing the company as a whole, you are doing an excellent job to keep us the #1 insurance company. However, claims is the face of your orginazation, which ultimately decides the success of the company. Better compensation for your claims processors and reps would go a long way towards us leaving to do the same job at Geico or Progressive for more pay.
Pros
SELF EMPLOYED AGENT. YOUR SCHEDULE IS YOUR OWN. YOU MUST SELL ALL LINES OF INSURANCE. LIFE INSURANCE SALES ARE A PRIORITY AS WELL AS AUTO INSURANCE.
Cons
IF YOU DON'T SELL ALL LINES OF INSURANCE, YOUR BONUS MAY BE IMPACTED. YOU PAY FOR YOUR OFFICE EXPENSES OUT OF YOUR COMMISSIONS.
Pros
They give you great opportunities to network within the business and do not limit you to one department one you are in.
Cons
Not a lot of hiring going on right now, and Bloomington isn't necessarily the most exciting place. That being said, it is a great place to start a family.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership really valued my opinions and gave great feedback. The only thing I would say is they should tailor development programs to different types of people.
Pros
Fine tune salesmensip and eperience
Cons
Low salary and very competitive
Pros
you stay busy and have opportunities to offer wide range of insurance coverage which also allows you to get bonuses to increase your income.
Cons
There are a lot of State Farm offices and the clients don't always understand that they need to come to your office instead of someone elses to get the best service.
Advice to Senior Management
take all of what is said above and improve!
Pros
Great growth opportunities for contractors
Cons
No cons. Great company to work for and great opportunities
Pros
salary, ability to move up in the company
Cons
workforce management needs to discontinue
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of workforce management, hire more associates so current associates do not get burnt out!
Pros
You learn a lot. Insurance is very interesting and the knowledge you get at State Farm will help you in many other jobs.
Cons
There is a lot to learn. It is not a job that you can be at for a year and know everything about ever line of insurance.
Advice to Senior Management
To some extent, more trust needs to be put in the Agents and Agent Staff, and in some circumstances, less in the hands of the underwriters.
