I worked at State of Arkansas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good leave accumulation. Your experience will highly depend on your agency. I would suggest working at any agency who is partially federally funded or generates its own revenue.

    Cons

Low pay, you could end up with unexperienced supervisors who was given the position by a legislator.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More raises

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Holiday pay, great hours, low stress level, laid back management.

    Cons

Pay. By default, they offered the lowest entry pay level simply b/c I had no prior "State" experience. My other years of experience wasn't even a consideration, even though it was relevant to the position in which I was hired. Stagnant feel. I hear retirement is good, but I don't see myself staying with them that long, unless I find a more suitable position.

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The State does not experience the lay-offs like corporate companies. Unless you do something terribly unethical, you can stay employed for years. Disciplinary actions are in stages, so there is seldom immediate termination. Significant opportunity to earn sick, vacation, and holiday time.

    Cons

Poor salary, inconsistent cost of living raises, hiring inexperienced managers, changes in policy without alerting workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give recognition to those outstanding employees who go above and beyond.

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The hours are 8:00 to 4:30 with a thirty minute lunch. Getting off at 4:30 is great for anyone with a commute because you generally beat the traffic. There is little to no stress at work. If you're stressed then you're doing something wrong. The work is never difficult and you aren't pressured to learn and be trained quickly.

    Cons

The pay is much lower than the private sector. Raises are available to auditors who possess an accounting degree. These raises come yearly and are almost guaranteed. You max out quickly and then are stuck at that pay. You will have coworkers who are not qualified and would be fired in a week if they worked anywhere else. Turnover is awful and the majority of people only stay 6 months or until they find a better job. Career advancement is only possible if someone retires or moves up themselves.

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Management treats us very well, we are allowed to take time off when needed. I am not micro managed, and enjoy my job very much! Benefits are OK.

    Cons

The only way to get salary increases is by promoting. There is no way to work through a grade of the pay scale. This means you have to "job hop" to get ahead.

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Plenty of stability within the workforce

    Cons

The biggest con is the pay. Most employees are well below the state or national average. All merit increases within the last several years were halted due to politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember although we are public service, pay is important and without appropriate compensation you will continue to loose the quality employees and keep under performing and ineffective ones.

I have been working at State of Arkansas full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I loved the work life balance, time off, child education leave, helping others with services

    Cons

No raise the entire time I worked there, no bonus offered, no opportunity for advancement just lateral moves with better titles but not better pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Education requirement does not match salary.

    Pros

The Best reason to work at The Department of Finance is that you get along with all the employees as well as the supervisor.

    Cons

There's really no downside working at The Department of Finance and Administration not in the area I work in.
