After working nearly forty years, I am glad i work for the State of California.

Tax Auditor (Current Employee) Sacramento, CA

ProsWorking with the State of California give you security for retirement and great benefits while working. Also there is educational opportunities to help further your career. You get good training and technology is introduced.

ConsUpward mobility was not always equitable. Management gets top heavy; they cut down and then gets top heavy again.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe consistent. Cut out the top heavy management.

    No movement

Program Associate (Current Employee) Sacramento, CA

ProsRelaxed work environment. Basically its a standard 9-5 with no worries since everyone has the mentality that it can be done tomorrow. In reality, it can.
    Also great benefits.

ConsOur agency has horrible management. For those that support the agencies basic functions, we get overlooked while others who only draw down from the agencies resources are out celebrating. This has led to poor morale with all staff. No growth opportunities mean no future.

    Advice to Senior Managementits embarassing.

Hard work is rewarded in the right Department

Senior Information Systems Analyst (Supervisory) (Current Employee) Sacramento, CA

ProsAt Department of Water Resources there is opportunity to promote, train and grow professionaly if you are willing to take advantage and work a little bit harder to be recognized. Work itself is also very rewarding knowing that you are supporting the 'lifeblood' of the State of California - water.

ConsIt's Government. No matter how progressive your Department may be, rules that come down from the Governor's Office musy be followed - currently that means no travel and therefore missed educational opportunities, as well as an income level , which while somewhat compensated for by the benefits (even those are slowly being whittled away) ids not on a par with provate industry. As a result we have an awful retention issue and the 'best folks' are leaving.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to be as flexible as possible under the rule book to allow your employees to work from home, work flexible hours etc. to make up for the poor compensation. And, as with any Government type job, try to take action against those who do not do their fair share - so the rest of the staff do not have to suffer.
