    Pros

The opportunity serving your community, job security, benefits and set hours of operation (if you're seeking hourly compensation and overtime, then State employment is not for you).

    Cons

Low salaries, little room for career growth and not the best environment for open discussion forums (there's little encouragement in sharing ideas).

    Pros

Your work hours are set from 8 am to 5 pm and you really don't work or are asked to work any overtime. The benefits are OK and they provide college tuition assistance.

    Cons

The pay increases rarely meets or exceeds the cost of living. Withing the past two years, the cost for healthcare and other benefits increased and was paid by the employees, so in reality it was a pay decrease. The management has full control on spending but does not want to listen to the clients or employees so the end result is a negative budget spending and additional cost cutting measures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Run the State like a business that focuses on the clients and pay your employees a competitive salary so they are not all leaving for more pay in the private industry.

Awful pay, little room for improvement, minimal appreciation for staff

    Pros

Job security once placed in a permanent position. Excellent and affordable health insurance, free life insurance, retirement plan options.

    Cons

Unmanageable workload, long hours with overtime compensation in the form of straight pay instead of time and a half (or the dreaded "comp time," no pay), constant pressure to meet deadlines (often at the expense of quality), nonexistent pay raises, nonexistent merit bonuses, little to no encouragement or recognition from management, unhappy colleagues, reminded near-daily that we are all expendable. Kafka-esque new computer and database system. Employees pay for everything: coffee, holiday luncheons, working lunches, cleaning supplies, birthday cakes. A truly depressing work environment. Precious little opportunity for advancement. Culture of rumors and gossip.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider rewarding your hard-working, criminally underpaid employees with, at least, a cost-of-living raise each year. Foment appreciation for employees amongst lower and middle management. Reevaluate existing workload and hire new employees, rather than pour millions into catastrophically dysfunctional system "upgrades."

Current Employee - Sanitation and Safety Specialist
Current Employee - Sanitation and Safety Specialist

    Pros

Benefits, public service, pleasant coworkers. Some flexibility for family life balance, however this is very dependent on individual supervisor. Some expect no emergencies with children or inability to work late and weekends

    Cons

LOW compensation. Increasing micromanagement for a theoretically professional position. Time spent documenting work 10% or more of day. Bait and switch of flexibility of hours presented in interview versus actual expectations on job. Some supervisors seem to have no training on wage and overtime laws for non exempt employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees as capable, professional adults. Realize these low paying jobs produce so much turn over due to management styles. Most employees enjoy serving the public and would be willing to stay with competent supervisors treating employees in a professional non adversarial manner.

    Pros

There is ample time for training, provided in a course that you complete with a class of other recent hires. The hours are good, and there are benefits to working for the government.

    Cons

Disgruntled customers calling about their benefits. You need a thick skin to deal with customers.
