I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I love working for the State of Michigan. I enjoy working in public service and everyone in my office is committed to helping others.

    Cons

The benefits used to be stellar but now employees are expected to contribute more financially. Depending on your salary, this could be a burden. Especially since jobs in this sector often pay far less than in the private sector.

    Advice to Management

Find creative ways to keep employees engaged. Promotions and higher pay are not always an option so it's important for managers to empower and reward employees in other ways.

I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

State benefits are really good, and pay isn't bad. Automatic raises every year (other positions give the raises anywhere between 6 months and 2 years. Each job has a different pay scale.) I personally have felt a lot of support and encouragement from management however I know not everyone feels that way. Lots of opportunity for promotions and movement into other HR offices.

    Cons

The pay scale transition from one position to another can prove problematic. To get an interview for a promotion, Classifications and Selections doesn't look at previous work history outside of the state which limits what you "qualify" for even if you truly qualify with previous experience.

    Pros

Plenty of opportunity to learn and dialogue with professionals in the industry across the state and country. Decent pay. Great benefits. Laid back work environment. Allowed to manage and prioritize your tasks and time on your own.

    Cons

Not much opportunity to move up.

    Pros

Good benefit. Flexible hours. Good family life. The environment is not fast pace that could be problem for you if like that kind of environment. Your ides will only flow through in the department when you have less qualified manager and the manger likes you. Most managers are not qualified all they have is seniority.

    Cons

No cons just adjust with manager and your life is good do not try to creative. Promotion will happen quickly in first five years, but after that no promotion. It's hard to work here and keep up with the industry.

    Advice to Management

Hire qualified managers and not the highly paid contractors.

I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, working with low income residents, friendly working environment

    Cons

No accountability, no timely communication from upper management (Lansing) down to the field, not enough training, working for the government benefits are always in question when its time for a new contract.

    Advice to Management

Hold employees responsible. Stop having other people do their work. Write them up and stop letting them slide by under the radar.

I have been working at State of Michigan part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work-life balance is usually really great. It depends on your department and specific job duties. Some areas allow employees to work alternative work schedules. (ie. four 10 hours shifts, work from home options)

    Cons

The politics and bureaucracy within state government can make work stressful. State government is very slow moving in all aspects. It takes a very long time to see action taken.

    Advice to Management

promote open communication from the top-down within the organization

I have been working at State of Michigan (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work is simple, repetitive, and you know what to expect on most days. Little planning is required for vacation, and you do no take work home.

    Cons

Little room for advancement, as they do no generally promote supervision from within. Heavily unionized, so everything is based on seniority.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within, give more opportunities for advancement, and attempt to minimize the numbers of changes to procedure - as they are frequent.
