I have been working at State of Michigan part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great Work-Life Balance with flexible hours and generous vacation and sick leave.
Generally great benefits, with an excellent 401k, health insurance, vacation time, etc.
Supervisors generally easy to get along with.

    Cons

Not a lot of action - public sector work just generally doesn't have the rigor or "excitement" of consulting, at least in the Engineering world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More formal training would be a huge plus, and a bit more technological advancement at the state and deeper coordination and organization would be ideal.

I worked at State of Michigan full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked in Foster Care. No day was ever the same. Eye opening experiences as to how others live and conduct their lives. Seen first hand what drug abuse can do to individuals. families and communities.. Learned the court system. Reality was a better education than my BSW degree.

    Cons

Seen very sad and hopeless situations. Seen first hand the devastation of drugs on individuals, families and community . Too many cases and have to cut corners.. Keep in mind each case represents time you have to go to court and testify...numerous times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I always had a Supervisor available for me for support and advice

I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good and security is good. We get regular raises and the insurance is very good. We get holidays off.

    Cons

It is a state bureaucratic job and there is a lot of politics involved in every position. The union and civil service decide a lot more than workers do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of civil service. They really make working for the state a big challenge and they slow the process of everything down.
