I have been working at State of Michigan

    Pros

You can make a difference in people's lives and there are quite a few perks like discounted services as well. The benefits are great too. I never felt any issues with work/life balance, but I know quite a few of my coworkers took work home and, at the very least, regularly check their e-mail from home during vacation time

    Cons

Pay rate is eh. Employee engagement varies wildly depending on where you work.

Cronyism. Some inept managers - some good ones.

I worked at State of Michigan

    Pros

Great coworkers to work along side. Job security is pretty good. Benefits and pay are good. Huge organization so many opportunities in many different areas.

    Cons

Cronyism. Some extremely inept managers. Lousy employees are given good recommendations to move them to another unit so they're someone else's problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees - most are pretty intelligent. Treat your employees like adults. Promote those who deserve it. Positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement.

I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

good benefits and pay for the kind of work that you're doing. Some of the coworkers are nice and will actually become friends.

    Cons

A lot of red tape to get things done. Management doesn't really care about your opinion on anything. Its easy to get into a "funk" and not really care about the work you're doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be more transparent with workers.

When Hiring, dont look immediately to the people you know in your department, look at all the applicants and choose the one you think is more qualified, not the person you have in your division already.
