I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working for State government provides stability and benefits. If you have the correct focus and attitude, there are many opportunities. You can also have a job that requires little travel, while similar careers in different organizations of the same size would require substantial travel.

    Cons

Working for the government can be a thankless job. While private sector jobs can pay substantially higher wages, the media and general public often scrutinize and criticize the work and wages of the public sector. It is far more interesting to read an article about how government went wrong, rather than what it did right. This creates the very bureaucracy that so many criticize.

Stressful and time consuming; management expects staff to do multiple job functions. There are rarely job opportunities in less demanding jobs.

I worked at State of Michigan part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Your schedule is flexible in that they will work around your classes. The pay is very good considering you do not have a degree.

    Cons

It was a lot of trying to "look busy", and not just me but many of my co-workers. I've never been so bored or had such low expectations of work product in my life. I would constantly be praised for making copies or sorting the mail so quickly......I mean seriously, how long does it take to do either of those things!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the extra workers that aren't doing much of anything......you'll have a happier workforce if they are being utilized

    Slow paced work environment
When they overwork you, they really overwork you
