    Pros

Stability, consistent employment with very little that can be done to get rid of you once you become an employee of the State, and benefits are decent.

    Cons

Low pay, extreme office politics, poor policies, difficult work environment to get anything done. This results in people who are only looking for stability or benefits, and many of the workers are there to put in their 9-5 and go home; little commitment to the work we do, less enjoyment and no enthusiasm.

    Advice to Management

Pay people better, get rid of people who are ineffective at their job. Most managers don't have any metrics for judging performance of employees, so it becomes a sea of individuals who would not be hired elsewhere.

    Pros

-Learn a lot especially when you come in green, work life balance is great, great vacation time and health benefits, management works with you and is not over your should all the time

    Cons

Slow paced, if you want to advance in IT as far as development goes it can be a challenge to get management on board, pay is below average but other things may level that out like time off and work life balance

    Advice to Management

Push new development techniques and encourage individuals to learn and grow, don't let people flat line

    Pros

Steady, Consistent and safe working environment. Good 401k contributions, and in for the life of your professional career. Opportunity for diversity. Consistent working hours.

    Cons

Lack of Motivation, Umbrella treatment of employees. Financial gains are only determined by votes of the legislators. Hard work and production just leads to more work and same pay. No standard to promote from within.

    Advice to Management

Define a system that rewards employees for quality work and for working hard. Hold employees accountable for their work, actions and production. Continue to allow for diversity. Make room for advancement.

I have been working at State of Michigan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I love the people I work with, and benefits are great. I also have a lot of flexibility in terms of work/life balance.

    Cons

Succession planning is not well structured although there are 18 agencies to work in. Pay is not on par with the private sector for same type of work. What's more, having to accrue vacation time is very difficult and creates challenges.
