Real people!

Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I have been working at State of Minnesota as a contractor for less than a year

ProsAfter 15 years in corporate America, I came to work for the State and haven't looked back. If you visit any state agency, you see real people, of all ages, genders, ethnicities, colors, and abilities. They are devoted and work with a lot of passion. Money isn't the driving force for most. Instead, they get a lot of meaning from helping those they serve. In other words, these look like people in my neighborhood. Plus, it's a place where you don't feel like a pariah if you are over forty and/or are a person with a disability. My work is meaningful and I can see that already it's making a positive difference in the lives of the people I serve.

ConsYes, the salaries aren't as high as they are in most corporate jobs and, wherever there are people, there are politics. However, those are the only downsides I've encountered -- and they are not major downsides at all. I have to park far, far away, but, the nice thing is, that with all of that daily exercise I've given up my health club membership!

Advice to Senior ManagementCan't think of anything.

Benefits and schedule

Attorney (Current Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I have been working at State of Minnesota full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe schedule is 9-5, absolutely. No law firm associate hours! Go home and enjoy your family. The rest of the staff are pleasant and helpful.

ConsNot much in the way of advancement, and the pay is mediocre. Benefits are good, if only for the couple of extra holidays per year.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management is political appointees, who come and go.

Overall, balanced work life

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at State of Minnesota full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe up side to working for the state is that you are able to balance your work and personal life with relative ease. While it's not unheard of to put in more than 40 hours a week, it's not a regularly expected norm, either. Many offices are flexible with telecommuting options, also.

ConsThe worst part about working for the state is the unions. Although they can do good, they also cause problems when moving from one position to another. You may not get the pay increase you would normally expect. Also, it's difficult to see where there is money wasted, understand why people complain, and have there be little you can do about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork to develop a merit based pay system the union will agree with.

I worked around some good supervisors and co workers, the pay was very good.

Janitor (Former Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I worked at State of Minnesota full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe pay is great, supervisors are good to work for. The work is easy, a lot of heavy lifting. Hours are good if you like working the night shift.

ConsTo many Employee's abuse there sick leave and the fmla. The union backs those type of people up and does nothing to change them, nor does the upper management do any thing to stop the abuse of the sick leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't tell all the employee your going stop the abuse on the sick leave and the fmla, and then allow it to keep happening.
