    Pros

A good job for bird's eye view of the state district court process - running the judge's courtroom and being part of the entire process of a case. It can be a wonderful learning opportunity

    Cons

The pay is poor and has not been raised in years. The duties do not require a law degree, despite what the posted job requirements say. It is a glorified administrative assistant position.

    Advice to Management

The judicial clerkship position is a vital and important one for which the pay and the training should be better. There is a disconnect between what the job description suggests and what the actual performance of the job entails.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at State of Minnesota full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Many dedicated, and compassionate people.

    Cons

Difficult to balance reaction vs. pro-action given politics.

    Advice to Management

Balance internal promotion and external hiring - too much institutional knowledge leaving over the next five years

I worked at State of Minnesota full-time

    Pros

Lots of learning opportunities; good co-workers; predictable work schedule (hours); decent vacation and sick leave; several opportunities to work on interesting projects.

    Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement; a few co-workers seem to be just waiting for retirement; upper management frequently not supportive; union pay grades can be restrictive.

I worked at State of Minnesota full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company is stable and offers stable employment with minimal layoffs. There are fixed hours and accrued vacation and sick time. Good health benefits including dental. Some opportunities for enriching job tasks.

    Cons

Limited options for advancement or employee development offered to few employees. Salary not comparable to public sector. Recruiting and employee development follows traditional conservative methods. Organization spends more on contractors than on developing internal staff to perform the tasks that contractors do.

    Advice to Management

Employees in all units should have opportunities to advance within the organization. Management should limit spending on consultants and contract employees and focus on developing the skilled workers they have within the organization.

I have been working at State of Minnesota full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flexible schedule - ability to work 80 hrs/2 wks as 10 8-hour days, 8 9-hour days + 2 4-hour days, 8 9-hour days + 1 8-hour day, or 8 10-hour days.

    Cons

Whether you are doing an outstanding job, exceeding expectations or just barely scraping by, just meeting expectations, you are compensated the same at your annual review with a 1-step increase.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at State of Minnesota full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Feeling like one is doing something socially useful. Probably an OK place for a new college graduate looking to get a year or two of experience for their résumé.

    Cons

Salary that is ~40% less than the bottom rung of the most pessimistic salary surveys. Generally poor relations between management and staff.

    Advice to Management

Get skilled personnel managers to fill such roles instead of promoting the most senior bureaucrats past their level of ability.
