I worked at State of Mississippi full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you are a lazy do-nothing person, this is the job for you. If you are a go getter and a results oriented worker, you won't fit in and you will be a target for bullying. If you are a performer, don't even consider working for the state. Performance is not valued AT ALL. In fact, being a good employee will cause you extreme grief.

    Cons

There is a culture of stupidity and bullying. Every detail is micromanaged from the top down. Bullying is rampant and goes ignored and unpunished. Management makes promises it does not keep. My way or the highway attitude.. Political favors overrule performance and good people are let go in order to satisfy favors. No pride in work at all. Only care is how much power can one get.

    Advice to Management

Total makeover. Get some folks in that are honest and care about their jobs.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at State of Mississippi full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are excellent. I love being able to get out in the community in my position and speak to community/social groups. I also am able to put my news reporter background skills to work.

    Cons

As is the case with most government jobs, the pay isn't the best. That makes it tough sometimes to pay the bills.

    Advice to Management

Rally the legislature for more money to raise salaries. This will attract a better qualified employee and maintain them. We have an ongoing turnover in some positions.

  7. I have been allowed to stretch my skills to various projects.
