The work has been interesting and good networking, but hard to move up in pay due to state budget issues.

I have been working at State of Oklahoma full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Leadership - I have had influence on key officials that trust me. Values are strong for the direct bosses I have had, and the work has always contributed toward a worthy goal.

    Cons

There is a lot of dishonesty and back-stabbing from those whose political goals have swallowed up their character. Overworked and underpaid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the cautions of middle management more and take time to understand how much work they are really doing.

I worked at State of Oklahoma for more than 10 years

    Pros

Job security and commitment to professional growth. A stable professional environment with quality staff who are committed to their jobs.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility. State pay grades dictate compensation. Senior leadership are often limited in what they can do to retain high-quality staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on challenging employees to think outside the box.

I worked at State of Oklahoma full-time for more than a year

    Pros

paid comp time for overtime. paid insurance. good pay.

    Cons

No leadership at all. Everyone runs around putting out fires when a little preplanning and communication would have prevented it. No one works as a team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train manager how to be a manager. Learn to communicate. Learn to direct employees. Learn to pre-plan. Learn to be a team player with all employees.

I worked at State of Oklahoma full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I worked for a great agency with talented, creative, dedicated professionals.

    Cons

Nearly everyone who worked there had compelling life reasons why they didn't work within our profession elsewhere. It wasn't the salaries that kept some of the best and brightest there. There were very, very few opportunities for career advancement, and nearly no professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improve professional development.

I have been working at State of Oklahoma full-time for less than a year

    Pros

It's a real fulfilling job because you are actually helping with disabilities get the job the want through training and vocational assessments. Great benefits.

    Cons

The salary is always a problem with the state but the worst part is there are very little training sessions during the year, so it could take up to 6 months for you to really know what you are supposed to do and the correct way to do it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find the time to add more training sessions

I have been working at State of Oklahoma full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good insurance benefit package

    Cons

State doesn't pay employees enough to live on and pay the student loans incurred for Bachelor's degree required to get hired. Most employees fall within income range to qualify for State benefits.

I have been working at State of Oklahoma full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I am very proud of the department in which I work. The work we do is second-to-none and recognized nationally as the very best. I have worked in positive environments before, but never before have I worked with people so diligently dedicated to their profession and their coworkers. They put in ridiculous hours and always over-deliver.

    Cons

The pay is horrible. The only state of Oklahoma employees that have been given raises since 2006 are appointees by the governor. They were given substantial raises ($40k+) to already substantial salaries ($90k+.) The rank and file employees that do all of the work receive zero appreciation or acknowledgement from the current governor and her appointees. The governor also has a reputation as being simple-minded and greedy (despite the fact that she was elected easily in a very red state) and as she continues to make bad political decisions and only scratch the bag of those just like her, she destroys morale and the state employees suffer consequences due to misdirected anger by constituents and businesses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the state employees deserved raises, stop making thinly-veiled budget excuses for not fairly compensating the hard-working state employees when huge raises are being granted to corner office, irrelevant jobs to the good ol' boys and girls. It's insulting and demoralizing.
