I have been working at State of Vermont full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits and time off policies are good. The longer you remain with the state, the more time of you accrue. The salary, while not competitive with large metropolitan areas, is good for region.

    Cons

The salaries could be better. Political pressure make is way to employees and detracts from the job. For example, the timesheet process requires me to enter all overtime on 3 separate forms. The union is weak and doesn't help employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire good people and stay out of their way

I have been working at State of Vermont

    Pros

You will have no problem keeping your job and/or making lateral moves around the company.

    Cons

Getting training, clear answers to questions, and understanding how to be productive will be your biggest challenges.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the love of god have those doing the work do the training for new employees.

I worked at State of Vermont full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Upper management when its good, its GREAT. Good benefits very quickly after sign on, including domestic partnership insurance. Good locations to work.

    Cons

Not enough employees to handle the job flow, HIGH stress and a lot of bureaucracy. A lot of recent turnover shows how its going downhill fast and their changes aren't implemented fast enough. Those who are there 15+ yrs are happy , the turnover with less than 5 yrs service is almost 100%. It simply doesnt pay enough for the job responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's good, fast and cheap and you can only get 2 of the 3. They hire fast and cheap, but they aren't good and it hurts them a LOT.

    Pros

Great benefits, and for the most part, great people to work with.

    Cons

Some dead wood due to union rules, which makes it hard to fire useless people.

I worked at State of Vermont full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Small agencies, great office culture. Feeling of interconnectedness between other agencies makes it feel like less of a bureaucracy than other states. Management genuinely cares about employees

    Cons

Due to being a good place, some promotional opportunities are difficult to come by. Some difficulty in breaking in to culture.

    Pros

I like it here quite a bit. The people are very nice. I work in the IT department and there are many opportunities to take classes to get certifications.

    Cons

I would like it if the pay could be higher in State government in general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I really like the supervisors here.

I have been working at State of Vermont

    Pros

    Outstanding colleagues
    Opportunities for growth
    Amazing information sharing
Everyday there is an opportunity to help others.
The work is interesting, challenging and varies from day-to-day.
    Non-judgmental atmosphere
    Very supportive environment
    Open to suggestions and ideas

    Cons

Sometimes clients are difficult. When that happens, that's when the real challenges happen!
There are plenty of rules and regulations overall, (as there should be given the nature of our business), but some seemingly basic protocols would ease some tensions. This is more an over-sight than management not wanting to offer them.
