I have been working at Statler Hotel full-time for more than a year

    Pros

feels like you're part of a big family, easy to make friends with co-workers, rob roles are not particularly demanding, free employee meals. very nice facilities and environments to work in.

    Cons

long hours, weird shift times, work weekends. pay is not that great. management is difficult to talk to about issues or problems. managers seem to have a very short shelf life - they keep changing so its hard to keep track of who is who.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be more open to receiving employee feedback

I worked at Statler Hotel part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Friendly management
    Great tip potential
    Great environment
    Fun vehicles to drive
Generally a great place to work.

    Cons

Immature student co-workers; they would call out on a regular basis, and were not put in check by management.
    Overly-long shifts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put the other students in check!

I worked at Statler Hotel part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Only have to work 2 shifts a week, usually co-workers are your fellow students, great for required work experience, bell stand tips are great in the fall, get to talk to prospective students and alumni

    Cons

Management often promises promotions/chances for students to move up but does not act on them when agreed upon, takes advantage of students and doesn't give them the time they need for academics/other activities, doesn't always acknowledge requests for specific days/times off, expects students to just do as told and students are not always treated as equals in the workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please don't make promises to students you don't expect to keep, treat your employees how you would like to be treated, be more respectful of student academic load, be more available to students to discuss work changes or scheduling and they might not ignore your call next time you need someone to cover...

I worked at Statler Hotel for less than a year

    Pros

They provide great hands on training and potential for increased responsibility. The hotel is also great with working with students around their school schedules, and provide opportunity for upward mobility.

    Cons

The only major con is having to work on one of the major student holidays (Fall break, Graduation, slope day, or spring break). Another con is because of school schedules, many times shifts will be at night or on weekends.

    Cons

I have been working at Statler Hotel

    Pros

The Statler Hotel provides a great opportunity to work with a diverse group of people of all ages and backgrounds. Students, locals and transplants make up the workforce. Everyone has the opportunity to take classes at Cornell, making ongoing learning a definite advantage to working here. The Finger Lakes area is beautiful, even in the winter. Cornell truly cares about its workforce and strives to offer the best in salary and benefits.

    Cons

It is hard to get in. Like most universities, Cornell and The Statler Hotel prefer to hire Cornellians. Even with the best of qualifications, it can be hard to break in. The Statler does not have the backing of a large chain or company and has to be very conscious of how money is spent. But, maybe that is a good thing.

I have been working at Statler Hotel

    Pros

The Statler Hotel is unique in the sense that it has a blend between students, temporary workers, and regular workers. This allows the students to learn more about operations, which is great for career development.

    Cons

Some departments are unwilling to change operations for the benefit of the organization. Some staff members are also hard to work with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More performance appraisals should be conducted at the management level. Also, there needs to be more clear communication between management and line-level workers.

    I worked at Statler Hotel

    Pros

The tips are good. Your always on your feet and even on slow days are making more than front desk.

    Cons

Long and odd hours exist as they do for many other jobs in hospitality. The pay is low and sometimes big groups promise to give tips when they check-out but never do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe they are doing a good job. All the groups they bring in mean high occupancy. High occupancy means more hours for staff which is a plus to keep having.

    I worked at Statler Hotel

    Pros

Get to meet many different people and also drive some pretty cool cars. Good tips make it a fun day.

    Cons

Sometimes you can get caught in a tough work schedule, and also the base salary is so low that you need to make good tips to have good money

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fun to work with the management
