    Pros

Great for students who need evening shifts or will return for the summer when business picks up. Great for people who work two jobs and want to work odd hours. The employees who do last more than a few months are probably some of the hardest working and patient people you will ever meet.

    Cons

Corporate sets unrealistic standards, especially considering their resistance to pay outside the very minimum, Bow tie employees deal with long, odd hours and few pay incentives, yet have to constantly meet high standards. Employee discounts on meals have been decreased each year rather than increased, and the uniform aprons have gone from solid to flimsy and easily breakable. While management is more than eager to reward customers who want a free meal to ensure future business, you would never ever ever expect corporate to offer anything of such kindness to employees. SNS is open on ALL holidays, and DOES NOT offer an increased pay to those working holidays, NOT even to those who work on Christmas. The turnover rate, understandably, is a few months. Managers work long hours and are more likely than not working more hours than they will be paid. It is not desirable to work at this company, most of the workers are there because they don't have another option. Lastly, it is absolutely disgusting that Steak N' Shake has never ever employed any form of recycling program. All paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and food waste go to the same thing. This company has no other value that money in the management's pockets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would love it if the CEO and higher management spent a few weeks depending on the salary of a bowtie employee. I guarantee that getting paid $3 an hour as a waitress getting tips on meals that cost $4, SNS might consider 1.) raising the salary, or 2.) making the work environment more enjoyable. We are not robots, management.

    Pros

All the people who work at SNS are great people. You can be promoted quickly.

    Cons

Complicated menu. Low price point so you get the worst type of guests. Managers pushed to cut hours with no support from corporate. Missing members of management team with no support from corporate. Old technology system, runs slow.

    Pros

Servers can make decent money working here if you are forced to work their "bar rush" shift. I could make about $100+ a night in tips on that shift. It was decent money and the work is really easy. Some of the managers are really nice.

    Cons

You simply can't have a life and work at SteakNShit if you are good at your job. Once the management finds out you are a good hard worker they will give you the long undesirable shifts nobody else will work or simply can't because they can't handle it. They will make that your permanent schedule pretty much not even caring about if you like the shift or not. The management feels like you get no availability because working there you become their worker so they can give you whatever hours or shifts they want. So, don't apply here if you're a normal person with a life because you can't have one working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go into your small town stores. Eat the food they serve, and see if it is up to par for your standards. It most likely won't be, because this business has gone down hill. You care so much about making the money that you forget about the customers. When drive-thru times are more important than serving customers that go their to dine at a "restaurant" you have a problem. You put your numbers before the customers.

Former Employee - Server/Service Trainer/Manager in Columbus, OH

    Pros

Serving was fantastic. Server wage plus tips, you make much more tips than you'd expect if you're a good, fast server. Opportunity for advancement ONLY WITHIN THE RESTAURANT. Very flexible scheduling for hourly associates.

    Cons

To move into corporate you have to be a general manager, even if you worked there for over 7 years with fantastic results as a server, trainer, and as a manager, and have a very qualifying college degree. Usually have to ask for promotions. 50+ hour weeks for salaried management with swing shifts required. Benefits only for full time, which is impossible to get unless you're in management. Benefits do suck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people who have a great reputation move up to corporate. They're more qualified than the outside hires for corporate positions and they understand the operations at the restaurant level. You don't need to be a general manager to be promoted outside the restaurant. Plain and simple. Everything went to crap when Sardar Biglari took over the company, from employee benefits to napkin quality.
