I have been working at Steak n Shake full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free meals, enjoyed working with my team

    Cons

Extremely high associate turnover, management and even upper management. I had 4 District Managers in one year. The company expects way too much out of its managers with very limited labor. Regional Manager and Human Resources Manager are not organized or have great focus. The company is 24 hours and most times as a General manager you end up working over 70 hours due to assistant quitting in the middle of shift. In 2 years I went through about 9 assistant managers.

I have been working at Steak n Shake part-time for less than a year

    Pros

You get some good employees and good customers. Some of management is willing to get you what you need as far as hours.

    Cons

We're open on holidays majority of the day; there's barely any raises; some managers play favorites and there's really nothing you can do about it.

I have been working at Steak n Shake full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very nice co workers and caring people in the Indianapolis office.

    Cons

Too many chiefs and only one guy calling the shot. The VP's who care are going to kill each other to get the boss to notice. Poor working conditions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

I liked the co workers and the job itself was ok.

    Cons

Not enough hours/training. I would have liked to learn more stations, but I was always hurried after prep work was done to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Very flexible schedule, close to home, paying for school, meeting new people, fair manager, customers are nice and friendly. Never a dull moment, Love the people I work with

    Cons

With it being a new store the tips aren't that great right now, but im sure they will pick up soon. Sometimes we get the occasional drunk due to being in the Casino.

I worked at Steak n Shake full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Employees get 40% off dine in meals. Hires 18 year old with out experience. Most positions are minimum wage. Open 24 hours

    Cons

Most positions pay minimum wage. Little opportunity for advancement. High burnout rate. 20-25 hours average work week. Schedules change without advanced notice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees a living wage. Do not purposefully under staff shifts. Simplify menu offerings. Minimum two shake and two drive-thru operators on weekends and happy hour.

I have been working at Steak n Shake full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Manager refuses to hire at minimum wage, great for turnover. This job allowed me to leave a General Manager position where I was constantly stressed out with a company that was abusive to its salaried management. I actually have a lower title, but make more per year. Yes, the bonuses are small, but they are abundant and much more easily attained. Someone else complained about two being fired in two months; with a full new management staff in the past six months, we have cycled eighteen employees, and our numbers, store moral, and management stress level have greatly improved. The right staff makes all the difference.Lots of room for promotion.

    Cons

Some company policies are outdated. Need a revamp in uniforms. Could use to loosen up on station layouts. While I understand the reasoning, what works at one store/volume may not work at another. Training for servers needs to be realigned, the amount of paperwork is outrageous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Steak and Shake is all about maintaining that classic look and feel. That does not mean all policies have to live in the stone age.
