Great place if you can get in

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Grand Rapids, MI

ProsBeautiful facilities, nice people. Positions are posted internally first in most cases. The company encourages open dialogue and shares information. They genuinely seem to care about employees.

ConsOrganization seems too large, hard to locate the right person for your needs.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe hiring process is inefficient, takes too long. Communicate with candidates better. It shouldn't take 6 weeks and 3 interviews.

Company says they are big on diversity but that is no where near the truth

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat products and innovation on products. Company promotes department collaboration and team work. Well known company in the industry. Efforts are there to promote and increase employee morale but because the company is so big sometimes you feel a bit lost in the sauce.

ConsLarge company with a very small company mentality, not always fair to employees especially contract employees, not all departments strive to be innovative and up to date on their way of thinking and addressing goals or problems. Training was extremely rudimentary. Little autonomy in position. People who work for this company are primarily individuals who have worked there for a long time and so the environment is very clickish and not very welcoming to outsiders (they act like you might take their job or something).

Finally - a company that practices what they preach.

Design Researcher (Former Employee) Grand Rapids, MI

ProsBecause Steelcase is a global company, they have a terrific support network, both internally with offices all around the world, and externally with the companies they contract with. This is invaluable from a research standpoint, with expedited access to a variety of markets and viewpoints. Steelcase's research department is small enough to feel agile and fast-paced - more like an independent consultancy and less like an in-house research department - yet with the financial and mission-driven support of an industry leader. Steelcase focuses on improving the ways people work, and they implement and even test all of its solutions at their offices, so its employees benefit from the designs. Very competitive compensation packages round out the value of working at Steelcase.

ConsOne 'con' of working at Steelcase might be considered a 'pro' depending on your disposition. For someone who craves big city life, working at the global HQ in Grand Rapids, Michigan will likely cause culture shock. It's very conservative, religious, and small-city feeling. However, Steelcase has offices in several other cities around the world, but each has many fewer employees.

Great people to work with. Strong team environment.

Workplace Consultant, Sales & Business Dev (Current Employee)

ProsTraining and development of people is incredible. Opportunity to work on special projects is a strong plus. Great product to sell. Good reputation product quality.

ConsNeed to be relocatable to advance. Merit increases are cost of living usually and no discussion of how to increase your base salary. Local teams can be a challenge as there are usually some long term employees that struggle with embracing change.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the path to monetary and career advancement more visible.

Great team atmosphere in most departments, always liked working there

Project Coordinator (Former Employee) Grand Rapids, MI

Pros- Management is generally very fair to employees, most despicable directors and managers that were there have been weeded out.
    - Good communication from admin. to employees
    - Very pro-family oriented, lots of flexability in schedules for family needs in most cases

Cons- Frustrating to see the waste sometimes (in people, time and materials) and not be able to do anything about it
    - Its a big company and the wheels mostly move pretty slowly

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
