I have been working at Steelwedge Software (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Medical Benefits are very good - Their California state and non-California benefits are very competitive. They also have other benefits that can compete with most Silicon valley software companies.
    2. Technology / product is easy to learn - Plenty of training opportunities available to learn the product.

    Cons

    1. Terrible management and office culture - Many people have left because of poor management and internal politics. They seem to have a way of getting rid of good employees while promoting the wrong people. Lot of inside backstabbing and detrimental communication and management is usually looking the other way instead of taking any action.
    2. Product / technology is not the best: This is 2014 and there are much more advanced technologies out there. Supply chain companies have not all adopted the latest and some like Steelwedge are much farther behind. They like to portray the image that it is the best software in the market but that's not reality.
    3. Process overkill - Lately there has been an over-focus on process so much that it has become counter productive. Process is to facilitate improvement not disrupt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Identify the bad apples and take action.
    2. Improve the product. Make it as good as you say it is !!

I worked at Steelwedge Software full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I'll throw in my two cents that you have very high growth potential in the Pleasanton office, and during my tenure there were many promotions from within, globally. Because Steelwedge isn't really for people who are interested in staying with a company more than a few years, there's a lot of opportunity to step into someone else's shoes after they've gone, and to learn a ton while you're at it.

The best part about Steelwedge is the team, hands down--it's a close knit group with a strong culture and amazing personalities and brilliance. It's still just small enough that everyone knows everyone else. There has recently been a push for better career development strategies, and I think with lots of collaboration between HR and managers this can be done. There are often lateral moves in addition to cross-departmental training, although I believe there could be more of the latter.

The benefits were FANTASTIC, including two health plans under Blue Cross, flex spending plans, two dental plans (Guardian), vision, an open PTO policy (just be prepared for the fact that PTO is based on workload and management approval, so you may need to do some pre-planning to get the time off), gym membership reimbursement, small perks like snacks and drinks in the kitchen, et cetera. When interviewing with Steelwedge, please ask about the benefits.

    Cons

There are a few members of the highest management ranks who could stand to learn some management skills and should collaborate more together for a more seamless organization. While it's true that every leader has flaws and things that could be improved, what worried me was management's inability to see and address these issues within themselves. The C-Suite all had great personalities but each lacked at least one fundamental leadership ability, if not many of them.

Work/life balance is tough, but they do allow employees to work from home (which you'll probably do a lot of after putting in your hours at the office). I looked at it as a trade-off for the global experience--giving presentations to India at 10pm or at 7am, or chatting with Japanese employees at tough hours. The UK and Netherlands had a tough time keeping in touch with the US unless they were working well into the evening. Most of the time we could make this work, but expect to work long hours (with a flexible schedule in most cases). The company is small enough that everyone talks to everyone else, so you need to bend a little and be prepared to sometimes talk to people at a more convenient local time for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would love to see the executive management humble themselves to partner with HR for constructive criticism on their leadership styles or attend leadership seminars. Your leadership methods are becoming very outdated, but I believe these issues can be fixed with an open mind to trying to leadership tactics.

I have been working at Steelwedge Software full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Fast paced, huge profesional growth potential.

Culture emphazise agility, passion, openess and employees realy live by it every day.

Finacial upside. Cloud applications market, nearly doubling every year, privately own....this company can make it big.

    Cons

Not for everyone, not a 9-5 type place. You are expected to do whatever it takes to make customers successful and go the extra mile.

Fast pace of growth implies lots of constant change. Not for the faint of heart or "lifers" who want to work the same job and company forever....It is more a fit for people ready to try new things, wear multiple hats, step of of the confort zone, contribute in new ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more. Great things are happening like the hiring of key executives from much bigger, very successful companies in the industry, key investments in R&D, and the energy and positive attitutde is felt in HQs. Need to continue transmitting same to Europe, Japan and India offices.

    Pros

Fast-paced environment, innovation is valued, employees are empowered to work independently and make their own decisions; people are friendly, helpful and fun. The product is great and it delivers real value to customers.

    Cons

Given the company's origin as a start-up, there are some processes and procedures that are non-existent or insufficient. That said, the company's management recognizes it, and has taken steps to remedy that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Place more emphasis on improving internal communication.
