    Pros

Stepan is small enough where each employee can make a difference. Stepan has a diverse product line and a global footprint that helps provide a stable foundation. If one area is underperforming, another can help compensate. They offer a good health care benefit package.

    Cons

Stepan sometimes relies on internal relationships to get things accomplished versus being process oriented and it can feel like you get stuck seeing the same problems repeating.

  3. Stepan Company

I have been working at Stepan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Family-first company, good benefits, good company to work for

    Cons

Not the most innovative company, risk averse, slow decision making process

    Advice to Management

Do not be afraid of letting people who do not do their jobs go - Some employees take things for granted and inertia has set in.

    Pros

One of the things that lured me to Stepan several years ago was the amount of employees who had been with the company for 15+ years, always promoted from within, and had a true "family" atmosphere. The only Pro's as of right now is it's a paycheck.

    Cons

Take all those pros listed on why I joined Stepan and shove them down the drain. Less promoting from within, strictly a P/L company, and management is very secretive and not transparent about strategy and vision. Change will turn company from place people actually had a career at to a place that you use as a stepping stone to your next job.

    Advice to Management

Change is fine, but don't change what has kept employees loyal and with the company.

    Pros

The pay is good and the people you work with (not for) are the best there is. It is a good place to work for the experience and training then move to a better place to work.

    Cons

Last few years there has been a large turn over of experienced hourly and salaried people due to retirement, quitting and firing to the point some areas have new people teaching new people the jobs. Upper management only worries about profits and how to get more work out of the fewer people. They also run the plant under an atmosphere of making everyone worry about being fired if they make one mistake. The plant has turned from a we are all family environment in the past to a use people and treat them like dirt dictatorship.

    Advice to Management

Realize that it is the workers not upper management that makes you your money. Treat the workers badly and you get less work and more turnover. Listen to the real experienced people that have worked here for a long time not some new hired upper manager that treats the workers like dirt.

    Pros

Veteran staff is knowledgeable and for the most part, friendly and helpful. Some departments offer flexible hours.

    Cons

The majority of veteran managers demonstrate little or no integrity and leadership skills. They are very poor communicators. Many of these managers claim they don't have the time to provide thorough instructions. Employees have to guess what they are supposed to do in relation to a given project and the outcome of the project suffers. When aspects of the project have not been completed correctly, managers will immediately blame the employee(s). These managers are unfamiliar with the number of duties for which their reports are responsible. They are not equitable in allocating duties/projects and exhibit blatant favoritism when doing so. Rather than address an issue, they ignore it, hoping it will go away. They are stubborn and will not listen to valuable employee input. Because of key veteran managers' refusal to listen to employees, the company recently lost 10+ million USD.

    Advice to Management

Mandatory management training for mid-level managers (15 or fewer years with the company). Offer a retirement package to those senior-level managers (annual salary of $150,000+) having more than 15 years with the company.

I have been working at Stepan

    Pros

Supervisors, work, people, a lot of work to stay busy during peak season. Most of the people there are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

Sometimes there wasn't work for weeks, other times the over time would be given at the end of the day, you never knew in advance. Upper management didn't care about the workers. Never wanted to give out raises.

    Advice to Management

    Get new management

    Pros

There is a lot of opportunity to learn and develop when you first start your career. There are multiple projects and assignments and opportunities for advancement in the beginning.

    Cons

Work life balance is very poor, you are expected to maintain constant connection to Stepan and work 60-80hrs per week. Depending on your location and department, morale is very low and high turn over of employees exists. Management falls under the definition of micromanagers, which leads to less fulfilling work environment and limits creativity of the work force.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to empower the employees, their ideas and potential for success might surprise you.

    Pros

Benefits are good and they have an onsite cafeteria (actually to keep you captive). Quality of life balance very bad. You are expected to work 60 hrs a week

    Cons

Mgmnt only concerned with bottom line. Too many people with relatives who get special treatmnt

    Advice to Management

Don't let family work with family and treat people like you used to when Sr ran the show
