    I worked at Sterling Commerce

    Pros

Great people, good benefits and salary, great product potential.

    Cons

Decisions made on the whim of uninformed execs, favoritism shown in promotions and other decisions, many decisions make no business sense and are not questioned as long as they are made by someone with a title, push to move jobs to India to save money and not necessarily to improve quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that you have sold to IBM, get out of the way. Maybe someone else can save the company from destruction by inept execs.

    Pros

Great culture, great people.. great place to work pre SBC days

    Cons

Great place to work until SBC took over..Begining of the end - the downfall..
    Management changed
Seemed like every other week they had a re-org
    Technology was par

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate to the folks that atucally do the work. So many "Closed door" meetings that keep you out of the loop.. Downs moral

Unqualified, clueless people are sometimes assigned to projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What's on the resume doesn't necessarily mean they can actually do the work.

I have been working at Sterling Commerce

    Pros

People and lower management are usually bright and willing to help. Better than average benefits. Flexible work schedule making it easier to balance family and work.

    Cons

Limited career advancement. Hard to convince management of new ideas that may pay off in long run. Seems that recently, upper management has not been making wise decisions. Seem to only be looking out for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen better to lower management and employees. It feels as if upper management is being slightly dishonest. Allow for more opportunity from lower tiers

I have been working at Sterling Commerce

    Pros

My experience has been positive overall. I have been given autonomy to do my job, work with talented and good people and the pay is better than average.

    Cons

Upper management seems to be disconnected with what really goes on at the individual contributor level. Unfortunately, it is rare that true collaboration and partnership happens, even interdepartmentally. We also don’t seem to finish things we start, probably because of the above.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don’t assume you know what is going on if you don’t take the time to ask or otherwise learn. Try to value you the employee base as the professionals they are.

    Pros

Good place to work. Management leaves you alone, with is also a con. Take time off as needed for illness/family. Benefits not too goo but not too bad

    Cons

What will the IBM takeover mean for the tech people....Work for a VP for the last year who has yet to sent/email/say anything to us.
What is the overall it strategy?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more involved with the people that do the work.
