    Pros

The firm seems to have a lot of growth potential, with expansion in Europe and plans to grow an investment bank. Good management changes in last six months.

    Cons

The people take themselves way too seriously, but in reality are incredibly incompetent. HR is is an absolute nightmare too- they have no idea what they're doing. Very disorganized there.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work times and locations - pay is nice and the break rooms are well stocked

    Cons

It's hard to narrow this list down. There is no on-boarding and no consistent review process; it is left up to the Managers to decide how and what to review their staff on (if reviewed at all). Staff levels and titles are not defined or consistent - you can have a AVP that has more responsibility than a SVP. I am a manager of staff and if I have a problem, the HR department is less than helpful (most of them have less than 5 years of total experience).

With the dismissal of the old executives, the new management team is young and yet to be proven. I am concerned that they are out for themselves and are making decisions that may negatively impact the firm longterm.

Remember the heritage of the firm - how the founders gave back to the community and why the leaders choose to keep it in Birmingham.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of responsibility from the start, expected to contribute immediately, hours weren't nearly as bad as most other banks

    Cons

Next to no structure in the internship program

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Develop a structure for interns

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They are flexible with work times and allowing you to work from home as needed which is very convenient. stocked break rooms are always nice. They pay well.

    Cons

Probably the biggest con is no help on health insurance, it's expensive. It's great insurance but you pay the full premium. Internally, there is bad communication that results in major frustration between groups. There is no training for new hires, you just jump in the fire.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees. It will definitely boost morale.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Not alot of responsibility is given to you. They plopped us on the trading floor and pretty much said find your way. So its up to you to go from there. They will give you small projects here and there, but more of a shadowing. For the ambitious, this is prime position for learning what you want to learn and networking with who you want to network. Great experience but it is what you make it.

    Cons

Can get boring sometimes. But not really a con for the ambitious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I thought it was awesome. Originally I would have said make it more structured but after the end, it made sense what it was all about.

I worked at Sterne Agee and Leach as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great people, strong potential for growth in the next 5 years. Just went through a major change in management, emphasizing growth in the investment bank. Management says revenue will double in the next 5 years. Very exciting opportunities to come.

    Cons

SAL is experiencing some growing pains. Though they intend to grow the investment bank, it remains somewhat unorganized and does not yet have a steady deal flow. They also need to start targeting more elite schools for better talent.

    Pros

Great place to work especially if you're young looking to get some good experience. Easy to talk to upper management and most of them go out of their way to help you succeed.

    Cons

Not really anything bad to say about the company. Things are constantly changing and evolving which is alway exciting.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Nothing. Literally NOTHING.

Well the work day did end at 4 or 4:30 depending on the role, but that's just because management leaves at 3:00 and they don't want it to look bad.

    Cons

    Terrible working environment.

    Horrible Bosses.

    Grossly Underpaid.

    Job security is non-existent.

Management paces the cubicle rows and micromanages.
