    Pros

Good group of people with a strong history in the south. New management with potential to add growth in the coming years.

    Cons

Not a very structured system for personal growth- no annual reviews, etc. Also, never a plan for the firms identity- Regional vs. National.

    Pros

Strong equity research analysts within financial services and consumer retail industries. The work environment is welcoming and more flexible than most brokerage shops on Wall Street.

    Cons

Equity research product in need of improvement within certain verticals. Wealth Management arm slow to grow. Formal training not available to younger employees looking to grow foundation. Health insurance options very expensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus should be on formal training, corporate structure and personal growth.

    Pros

Long track record and notable name

    Cons

40 years of the same CEO has led to an autocratic, mercurial, closed minded leadership. Led to the recent leadership shake up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to your leaders and don't override them with your own whims

    Pros

Some high quality talent but overcome by terrible management.

    Cons

Inexperienced management who put personal gain ahead of business growth and employees. Horrible leadership and direction from top down. Very unprofessional work environment that suppresses any career development or growth. Business is beading a slow and dying death unable to compete with the market.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach

    Pros

The firm seems to have a lot of growth potential, with expansion in Europe and plans to grow an investment bank. Good management changes in last six months.

    Cons

The people take themselves way too seriously, but in reality are incredibly incompetent. HR is is an absolute nightmare too- they have no idea what they're doing. Very disorganized there.

I have been working at Sterne Agee and Leach full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work times and locations - pay is nice and the break rooms are well stocked

    Cons

It's hard to narrow this list down. There is no on-boarding and no consistent review process; it is left up to the Managers to decide how and what to review their staff on (if reviewed at all). Staff levels and titles are not defined or consistent - you can have a AVP that has more responsibility than a SVP. I am a manager of staff and if I have a problem, the HR department is less than helpful (most of them have less than 5 years of total experience).

With the dismissal of the old executives, the new management team is young and yet to be proven. I am concerned that they are out for themselves and are making decisions that may negatively impact the firm longterm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the heritage of the firm - how the founders gave back to the community and why the leaders choose to keep it in Birmingham.
