Back office operations experience in the STL headquarters, comfortable environment but not much room for career growth.

I worked at Stifel Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work-life balance, as the place clears out around 4:30 or so. The occasional trip to a baseball game is nice. Great support for technology. Generally there was no issue with spending some money for solid tools.

    Cons

Absolutely no software development lifecycle. Complicating that are moving targets and incredible scope creep, as well as the occasional rebooted project. The pay is below standard, and the benefits are pretty chintzy. The total benefit/salary package is well below industry average. People are promoted within despite not having the right experience to actually lead. Nice, well-meaning people, but not really qualified for actual leadership. A lot of leadership has been there FOREVER, and are deeply entrenched in the old way of doing things. It would be nearly impossible for someone to, say, convert them over to AGILE. Buy-in from department management would be nearly impossible... or if a proper SDLC actually was implemented, it would get stomped all over.

    Advice to Management

Train your management team to be managers. They are great people that are truly busting their butts to do good things, but are ill-equipped to actually MANAGE. Implement an industry-standard software development lifecycle. The amount of productivity that would happen if AGILE took over would be incredible. But your upper management would have to be fully invested in the process, or it would be an utter failure. Bring total compensation at least a little closer to average. Because it's really, really low.

I have been working at Stifel Financial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The management in my group is great, everyone gets along and it is very laid back. The company is very gracious with its time off policy.

    Cons

Compensation is well below industry standards, seems to be lacking in terms of bleeding edge.

I have been working at Stifel Financial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy to get a job. Only an associates degree is necessary for hire. Was fun to work with the various branches.

    Cons

In operations, you start at 30k salary. Critical atmosphere--headphones were banned while data entering. Office is loud and voices carry.

    Advice to Management

Operations staff micromanages and critical about the darndest things. Communcation is poor.
