I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

Flexible scheduling to fit your availability

    Cons

Embarassingly low compensation. Education is not valued by this company. Career advancement is based exclusively on seniority and favoritism, not skills or abilities. Employees are passively treated as a burden and are regarded as a liability, not an asset. Stores artificially inflate the appearance of profits by drastically cutting hours and refusing to order essential supplies at unsustainable levels. Looks good on paper but not from actual revenue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting individuals with no leadership skills, integrity, or business compentency. Stop sqandering the educated and talented because you regard all employees as just a number. Devote more energy to making money through sales than obsessively trying to save money.

    Pros

-union? idk if this is a true pro but you cant get fired.

    Cons

    -people don't get fired
    -7 years for $9.20hr
    -unskilled workers
-only time things are done right is when upper management visits
-when upper management visits its a cluster of like 25 people who think lets stand here and talk and block customers from getting by. All they do is talk and talk... then complain for about 1hr.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

union, but the pay is less than at other nearby grocery stores and you have to pay union dues and can't get full time.

    Cons

store manager horrible bully-she wont give you full time with benefits., or let you post into another position or transfer to another store- is a bully. she regularly schedules people 10 hrs weekly, which is violation of union and she gets away with it. union is lame. employees hate working there for manager that ignores union rules- minimum 15 hrs weekly. she cuts corners by forcing you to do 8 hrs work in 4. repeated safety and health violations. $8. hr for experienced worker and you have to pay union dues weekly. is definitely not a livable wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be more like roche bros. respect your employees. pay a living wage and benefits and full time hours. listen to repeated employee issues and take note when there are so many regular union and safety violations and so many employees quitting . better to have a good manager and happy employees and low turnover, than a poor manager-who regularly understaffs, bullies and verbally abuses employees(in front of customers!) equals high turnover and unhappy employees. people talk. word of mouth- just like with wal-mart and market basket. a good manager doesn't regularly understaff and overwork employees and demand they do work that previously 3 people did in 2, 8 hr shifts, and demand it be done by 1 person in 4 hrs- "it's mandatory"if you say anything she cuts your hours to under 15 hrs. bully! never worked under those conditions, ever! even managers under her hated her and were happy to be transferred out. seriously get a better manager. she made it unnessacarily stressful and difficult on a daily basis.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The only good thing about stop and shop was the life long friends I made.

    Cons

The union is just as bad as managers. Full-time employees think they are better than you. the rules change every few months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Want to run the store right ask people that work in the store not somebody that has a degree in business management that has never worked in a store. Nothing can beat experience, knowledge is power and the workers that work in the store have the knowledge they know what can be done to make it a better place. Oh and stop being so cheap!!

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -good first job
    -employee discounts (minimal)
-benefits can apply to part time employees
    -paid training
    -easy work

    Cons

Management is horrible. They offer poor compensation, literally offering minimum wage. Not only do they offer minimum wage, but they give only part time employment. It is difficult to only work 4 or 6 hour shifts and still make enough to live off of. I was offered a promotion to a customer service representative, which would require me to do more work and use my bilingualism as a skill, yet offered no extra hours or compensation.

If your lucky once on union you regain a small amount of dignity.

    Cons

Everything stated in the review and much more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you treat everyone like family then the sore would be a better place to shop at or work at.

    Pros

    Paid Vacation
    5 percent employee discount
Earn a paycheck every week and that is really about it

    Cons

2 Years ago, we were hit by the worst storm ever HURRICANE SANDY and every store was opened. I had a friend who was forced to go in that day and he was a cartboy. How does a store run if there are empty aisles, very few customers and no work to do outside?!?! Makes no sense at all! This is way too extreme for retail. PRICE CHOPPER was closed in VT and CT.

I couldn't stand the company policies..harsh and abusive!..cartboys are not even allowed in the store?! Even when it is raning, snowing...makes everyone feel lonely..This is ABSURD! I have seen them bring their headphones to make that job LESS BORING..which is fine by me...

Also the management loves to MICROMANAGE their employees...they yell if things are not done perfectly..decreasing the cultural and values of this company.DAMAGING A PERSON'S MENTAL HEALTH...They will suck you in literally. NO WORK/LIFE BALANCE with this company...Manages have no clue what they are doing...they do not take anyone's work related problems into consideration. Very hard to get promoted towards the top

The union is a joke...you can call them as many times as you want but they will not help anyone...same LAZY people everyday..They take advantage of people who work hard and throw more work on top of them..

Not worth working here! you all have been FOREWARNED!
    hope all this info helps

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat people equally regardless!
Reward people who work hard and care
    Fire those who are lazy.
Close all stores during extreme weather
    Increase the starting pay

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible with hours, although you might not get more than 12 a week. Good place to work if you are going to school at same time, after that, get a different job.

    Cons

Not enough room for all of the cons with this company. Terrible management, employees hired after 2011 can't have more than 29 hours a week. Managers and full-timers do nothing then get mad at part-time employees for not doing more of their work. Union doesn't protect you and they take over a full year to settle contract. Find a different low paying job, trust me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice for management, they would only pretend to listen anyway.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a paycheck. At least I have a job, while so many people are unemployed.

    Cons

They keep cutting hours. And you never know your schedule until 2 days before your week begins. It makes it impossible to take on a second part time job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase part timers hours and have more coverage.

    Pros

paid vacation time, the longer you work there the more vacation time you get. Also get paid time off as well, but you need to use them or lose them.

    Cons

    they cut hours last year
    belonging to a union
the good help gets moved around all the time if you're a full timer

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

give pay raises to the people who earned it, not by the union!!!
allow the workers to opt out of the union
