I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

It is less busy, more enjoyable, you get to go outside and get some fresh air as you have to water the plants outside, get to manage the department without anyone breathing down your neck, get to work around plants and make flower arrangements.

    Cons

Depends on manager, sometimes get called up front to help out cashiers when it gets hectic, a lot of watering and you have to blow up balloons, cleaning up department.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You will get a weekly paycheck. If you work in the Back (like Grocery, Dairy, or Porter), you will be left alone to do your work and respond as needed.

    Cons

If you work Front End you will constantly be managed. When it comes to scheduling and requesting time off, you have to fend for yourself. The store will always be under-scheduled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't know who upper management is. Quincy Headquarters or the Home Office in The Netherlands? You are lucky to see your store manager.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Friendly employees, some favorite customers who I love, if you are a good worker you tend to get hours

    Cons

Depending on what store your in, poor management. Don't care about your opinion. Care about stupid things. Cliques.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take into consideration the opinions of the employees. We are the ones that work directly with customers, not you so be reasonable with your expectations. Everyone's not perfect.

I have been working at Stop & Shop full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Flexible vacations/time off, job security once you get into the union, 5% employee discount, benefits once you get full time.

    Cons

Management constantly cuts hours and expects the same amount of work to be done; condescending, inflexible & incompetent management; lack of training once you advance; favoritism; bad scheduling/lack of coverages; no team work/everyone is out for themselves; laziness/incompetence is rewarded; their "advancement program" I was enrolled in was a complete joke as out of the four of the meetings that were scheduled, three were cancelled. Here is an example of the management teams they put together: The management team at one location I worked at during a night crew meeting acknowledged a company program wasn't working, yet their idea was "we're not going to follow the guidelines of the program but we're going to make it look like it was working because the company invested a lot of money into it." The reason the program wasn't working was that not enough hours were scheduled for the week to actually make this program work as it was intended to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better training is needed for management and all employees in general. Stop cutting hours as coverages are important to keep shelves continuously stocked and will increase sales. Ditch the cronyism that plagues this industry. Reward and acknowledge good work and criticize/punish laziness.

I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

I'm guaranteed 40 hours. The health insurance is very affordable thanks to being single and the union of course. The pay is pretty good. Most people that I work with are decent human beings unlike the management upstairs.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement. Management not too personable. No good morning or a simple thank you. There is a lot expected from you with very limited help due to payroll cuts. Certain people are very set in their own ways thanks to the union.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just a simple hello or thank you goes a long way. I like to feel appreciated.
