A great company to get your foot in the door and learn

Intern (Former Employee)
Hawthorne, NJ

I worked at Structural

ProsGreat pay for an Intern
Tons of different jobs throughout NY Metro Area
Used lots of new cutting edge technologies

ConsLack of relationship/communication between the Managers and foreman (ones I worked with atleast)
Sometimes got into jobs without knowing full scope of work

Advice to Senior ManagementStick to what you know which is the concrete industry because you do great work. It seemed like the company was going in a GC direction and if thats where they want to be then they need to work on that.

Project Engineer Intern at STRUCTURAL

Project Engineer Intern (Former Employee)
Ellicott City, MD

I worked at Structural as an intern for less than a year

ProsGood pay and relocation stipend. Hands on experience. High regard for safety. From the bottom to the top of the company, I would be surprised if another company took safety more serious than STRUCTURAL.

ConsAll new employees have to work manual labor for ~3months before doing anything else. They took me to lunch on my first day and I had a meeting with a group of Project Engineers one time. Besides those two times I rarely ever met with anyone above the Project Foreman to speak about anything substantive. Absolutely no mentor program. Job sites changed weekly - one week in D.C., the next in Northern Maryland.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave some type of mentoring program. Invite intern to an important meeting or two.

No direction

Estimating (Current Employee)
Baltimore, MD

I have been working at Structural full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood field operation and safety culture

ConsNo direction with regard to where the company is going. Do they want to be a GC or focus on what they know repair work. Company expanded very fast in many directions, they need to refocus on business units that are profitable

Excellent place to start a career, poor place to advance one

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Elkridge, MD

I have been working at Structural

Pros-Incredibly high potential for the company to do something great
-Incredible opportunities for learning from an industry leader
-Uncompetitive, and team-based work environment
-Good camaraderie

Cons-Potential for the company to do something great is capped severely by the abilities of people in "leadership" positions
-People are frequently promoted to the point of total ineffectiveness, which can damage the overall work environment
-"Homegrown" talent is severely underpaid
-Bloated corporate structure

STRUCTURAL - great place to work

Estimator (Current Employee)
Pompano Beach, FL

I have been working at Structural

ProsVery good people from top to bottom, not very much office politics. Plenty of room to advance if you're in OPS side of business. Safety culture. Try to keep things interesting. Leadership is not one tracked mind.

ConsSome inter-branch rivalry gets in way of teamwork

Advice to Senior Managementtake walls down between branches. Stress that we all work for one goal and show it,

Decent place to work IF your salaried employee

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Hanover, MD

I worked at Structural

ProsDecent pay, "Normal" hours, Stable company

Cons*No set guidelines so rules vary from person to person (whats okay for one person is not okay for another)
*Human Resources is a joke & isn't for employees but for management
*Not a company for "working mothers" or "family friendly" in the least
*Not a friendly/easy going environment to work in
*Inconsistencies all over the place with managerial decisions
*Promotions for non-management employees few & far between (you would think for such a large company they would encourage promotions/job movement within the company before hiring outside)

30+ years experience - HORRIBLE COMPANY

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Structural

ProsCompany probably won't go out of business, thats about it.

ConsI have 30+ years experience in the construction industry & have never worked for such a horrible company. The company solely cares about making money, not its employees in the least. I had such high hopes when I started in this position but quickly realized how secondary everything is to profit for Peter Emmons. He "talks a good talk" about working environment etc. etc. but all in all it is truly the worst place I have ever worked & I was a salaried employee. Ive never been so thrilled to quit a job.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
