    Pros

Smart employees Dedicated clinical staff Local to Akron

    Cons

OMG! As of July, female employees are required to cover all skin except their face, neck, and lower arms. If they wear skirts, they have to wear tights or panty hose. The hose has to be tightly knit (no fishnet weave). And NO open toed shoes, even if the woman is wearing socks or stockings. Even the employees who wear very conservative dress for religious purposes are upset!!! This isn't about patient care, or health standards, this is the actual, intentional, "professional" retro 70s show, image, that Summa is working to promote. Mono-culture, diversity by check-box, not by appearance. Actively coaching employees to appear professional, where professional means the white middle class culture.

    Advice to Management

If the new dress code is a reflection of the image you have for Summa Health System, I would rather work for the CCF. Please don't take this further and require feathered hair, wide ties, and have disco music in the elevators!

    Pros

Great benefits, most employees are great and really care about the patient.

    Cons

Bad company's financial decisions/management causing overworked, over stressed employees due to low, low staff levels.

    Advice to Management

You need good people to stay with Summa, get them the help they need to provide for the patient the service they deserve.

    Pros

    Benefits. Great food service options.

    Cons

Very political environment, passive aggressive. Every man for himself. With all of the staff reductions couldn't trust anyone.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Take employee satisfaction feedback seriously. Hold upper management accountable if staff is dissatisfied. They care and deserve a good work environment.

    Pros

..... Some of the people that work there do truly care. They have recent renovations and a decent cafeteria. That's about the only positives I can think of.

    Cons

Management is unaware of what is really happening. Patient care and privacy is compromised daily. Employees are treated as numbers and not individuals. They have a high, medium and low rating system, but being rated high means nothing. There is no compensation or promotion for being a high performer. No incentives.

    Advice to Management

Employees quit management not companies. That's exactly why I left. If you truly care about those that you've deemed to be a high performer, I'd suggest not treating those people poorly.

    Pros

Fairly good benefits. Some good colleagues. Many nice patients.

    Cons

Poor management Blaming culture Rude and unprofessional treatment of employees by management Mistrust of management by employees No opportunities for advancement Serious problem with favoritism Favored employees can treat patients and colleagues unprofessionally and not suffer consequences Consistent notice of errors, no acknowledgement of good work. Very disheartening. No raises

    Advice to Management

Adhere to the same standards that you expect of employees. YOU are Summa too!

    Pros

3 weeks of PTO Good health insurance Centrally located in Akron near freeways

    Cons

Very high-stress environment due to bad processes and entrenched employees. "Good 'ol boy network" in full force. New employees are expected to serve those with seniority regardless of experience or ability. Extreme incompetence in business analysis and project management due to poor quality employees. Software development managers are non-technical and responsible for a hostile work environment. Very unfriendly, unhappy co-workers who never want to hang out after work and won't even give you a ride if your car breaks down. Too many uneducated or low-performing employees working in technical positions, and promoted based on seniority rather than ability. Managers are former business analysts who know the healthcare system but not software development. Salaries all over the place. The development department has no methodologies or rhyme or reason for doing things--they just react. They do nothing but respond to program aborts every morning because the source code is a mess, written by questionable programmers, and nothing is ever done to clean it up and improve it for the long term. Instead, aborts are handled day by day with endless bandaids. New employees are blamed for failures, entrenched employees are given a free pass over and over again. If you confront an entrenched employee who has the ear of a manager, prepare to be given the boot as soon as the opportunity arises. Program updates moved into production without ANY testing. No QA department! Despite the fact that software breaks continuously and people are relying on their claims to be processed and ID cards to be printed. Nothing is ever done, just more bandaids. Deep wounds are never treated.

    Advice to Management

Stop turning a critical eye away from entrenched employees and middle managers who are performing poorly and running out good people. There's a reason they've been there for 15+ years while more talented people have left. And there's a reason why CMS censored you--it was absolutely needed, based on how claims were being botched. Spend some time in IT and be educated on the broken processes that led to this situation.
