I worked at Summit Business Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Busy work, time flies. Really great colleagues and humorous people at the bottom level, contributing to team cohesiveness. Very flexible with hours. Complete autonomy. Not the kind of job where work is around the clock. When you leave the office, the work stays there too, which is really refreshing.

    Cons

Top to bottom management with too many executives and not enough staff to help the lower management with the dirty work. The few people who are actually working are struggling to stay afloat. Large layoffs multiply an already small department's workload, without compensation - this in addition to the constant change of company software, practices and departments that frequently take place mid-project. Not very open to new ideas. Lower level is not heard, executives are a ghostly figure. Difficult to grow in this company.

I think the CEO tries to be in touch and to be as communicative as possible but there seems to be a breakdown with fellow executives and the senior management beneath him. Very much a power struggle with most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really have some great staff beneath you that are really fun to work with and willing to put the hours in (as they do already). The staff is great and should be celebrated. You could really have a good thing going here if you shift a little more focus to avoiding employee burnout. Maybe you hire more execs to ideate? But it might be worth ideating with the people that are driving the machine face-to-face with your clients everyday.

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere and able to work from home on bad weather days. I had great rapport with my boss and colleagues and enjoyed my work. I think there was a good balance of work / home.

    Cons

Layoffs are often and without notice. Work load increases with every layoff, without any compensation. Company mandated furloughs, salary decreases across the board, benefits eliminated. No direction or feedback from upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes and treat your employees right.

    Pros

Very relaxed atmosphere; ability to work from home; good benefits; nice colleagues.

    Cons

Unexpected mass layoffs and management changes; senior management seems to be purposely ruining company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop firing workers and stop hiring management. You won't have a product without the producers -- unless the goal is to get rid of the product. In that case, let employees know so they don't waste their time and effort.

    Pros

Very relaxed atmosphere. Usually if you do your job, nobody will bother you

    Cons

Too relaxed, no management direction, you can feel confident that your doing a great job since there is no feedback from management, then when you least expect it, you department is sold or eliminated

I have been working at Summit Business Media

    Pros

Provides balance for home and work life. Outstanding content for the industry's they serve. Strong, reputable brands

    Cons

Management is very disconnected from sales. Offer little to no support, and only focus on the "Big Advertisers", and a very select few of sales people. Use to be a great place to work, slipping away from what built the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn and respect the industry. Create a work atmosphere that fosters growth and success, not fear of losing your job and failure. You have a smart, savvy and productive sales team. You might want to keep them around.

    Pros

Ability to work out of (my) home office; terrific administrative, sales assistants, digital people, custom marketing.

    Cons

Direct managers, playing the "blame game", rather than supportive of their salespeople. Budget cuts impacting face-to-face sales calls.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put money into good human capital, and sell the company.

I worked at Summit Business Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work/home life aspect was good.

    Cons

Poor management, no product development. Expect top results with second rate products in the marketplace. Employees put on probation and jobs being threatened all the time. Highest turnover of any company i have worked for. Middle management is running scared and just blaming sales people instead of fixing problems.

Senior level management is aloof and is very top heavy. CEO is running company into the ground as he has done in his past roles in the media industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn the business. Treat employees with respect. When an employee at a town meeting says he feels like the guillotine is about to drop ,listen instead of getting angry because most of the employees felt that way.
