    Pros

    The company is stable and strong; you don't have to worry about it going away any time soon. Benefits are good for employees.

    Cons

    The company valued appearance over reality; they'd rather you "look busy" than be efficient. Pay is under average for the industry for the support staff. Workloads are not managed well, with some people being over-busy and others having too much time (and then being forced to find pointless make-work to fill in the time).

    Pros

    There are no pros to working there.

    Cons

    Work Load is too much for the claims examiners. Management consistantly makes employees feel worthless. If you do not complete the work they want or if you ask for help. Management will find a reason to write you up. Management leaves on time while the employees are forced to stay and complete claims.

    Advice to Management

    Your STD department has such high turnover because the supervisors are incompetent slave drivers

    Pros

    Great corporate communication. Terrific benefits. Excellent at seeking employee engagement. Nice rewards and employee recognition programs. Great perks; i.e., gym membership assistance, Charitable matching grant program, tuition assistance, EAP and rewards for participation in wellness programs. Love the Global Learning Center course availability.

    Cons

    Usual challenge of working for huge corporation. US operations in Eastern Time Zone and my business unit was in Pacific Time Zone. Bonus structure has complicated formula. Not as easy to grow in career as I'd like. Frequent restructuring of sales and distribution units.

    Pros

    The benefits and vacation structure are great, and for most of the business areas there is a great work-life balance available for the majority of employees.

    Compensation is generally in-line with the industry, but varies highly depending on your manager and business unit.

    The majority of peers and co-workers are very friendly and there's a good sense of team.

    Cons

    The company's larger corporate organization in Canada is extremely stable and consistent. However, the US organization has seen a great deal of uncertainty, strategic direction shifts, and reductions in business lines over the past several years. Future direction and stability in the US is extremely uncertain, and clear communication from senior management is non-existent.

    The US organization thrives on form over substance, and opportunities do not exist for hard-working, honest, and talented employees. The most talented team members are singled-out and minimized by managers that do not understand the subject matter or responsibilities of the teams they are managing. Who you know is definitely more important than what you know. Hence all the other reviews here describing that the most talented people leave. (this is absolutely accurate)

    If you're looking for punching the clock and low demands on your time and skills, this might be a great fit. But if you're looking for challenging and rewarding work, Sun Life might not be the place for you.

    Pros

    Flexibility and work environment are extremely positive. Entry level salaries are decent.

    Cons

    Extremely hard to grow in the company. Better to get in and get experience and then move on.

    Advice to Management

    Find ways to encourage good employees to stay or you're going to lose the talent.

    Pros

    Ability to work from home. Work-life balance is excellent. Substantial vacation time. Good exit packages when layoffs occur. If you're complacent you can stay here for a long time.

    Cons

    Yearly layoffs and they often occur around the holidays. They've been eliminating older employees for years now. If you're over 50 you're on the chopping block.

    Office culture in Canada is night and day compared to US. Folks in CA like their job and they're proud of the company. People in the US show up for a pay check and often wonder if they're part of the next round of layoffs.

    Office politics is brutal. Lots of large personalities here with no room for growth making pretend that this is corporate America. Several managers/Dir/AVP's are brutal to work for. Clearly they are "lifers" and not happy about it and feel the need to treat employees very poorly.

    Regime changes, SLF loves to bring in flunkies from other organizations such as Bank of Montreal or Lincoln Financial. They should try to minimize the potential impact and only bring on one employee from another firm, not the entire "click."

    Advice to Management

    Start running the company as one, not separate entities.

    Don't ever buy a stadium and then lay off 3500 employees the next day.

    Stop laying off US employees annually. Stop layoffs at Christmas.

    Pros

    Open, inclusive, exciting (as only an underwriter could understand), smart peers, upper management.

    Cons

    communication could be better betw management levels, major changes (regional or., system and pricing methodology) changes tend to occur near or at 4Q business cycle. Sun Life- this yr- seems to be addressing this (ie, thinking ahead).

    Work life balance and employee health benefits.

    The commute can be challenging at times given its location.

    Advice to Management

    Managers that have employees located in different countries - If you do not do so already please try to stay in constant contact with those employees as you would your employees that are located in your home office.
