Pays the bills if you don't mind being zombified

Senior Software Developer/Analyst (Current Employee)
Wellesley Hills, MA

I have been working at Sun Life full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWork-life balance? 70% of the development and BSA staff are doing nothing most of the time while Project Management and SVPs bicker and play politics. Salaries are competitive and there is opportunity for advancement if you are good at politics (not your job). The problem with work/life balance here is a lack of challenging work, actually. On-campus gym was a big plus for me.

ConsCulture is absolutely soul-destroying if you care about your work in any way.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood luck!

Intelligent, committed management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Wellesley Hills, MA

I worked at Sun Life full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI worked at Sun Life for over 10 years and found it to be an organization of high-integrity. The management is working hard to modernize the company image and make it more known in the U.S. The benefits are excellent and the headquarters office is a very nice environment to work in.

ConsLike most companies these days, they are trying to accomplish a lot with fewer people. Hours can be long and stressful sometimes.

Once Great, Now Iffy

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Wellesley Hills, MA

I worked at Sun Life

ProsBenefits package, work-life balance, teamwork within a function
People in general were very friendly and caring
Most leaders put high value on open and early communication

ConsSince the company went public around 2000, business strategy seemed neither stable nor consistently prudent. Also, company-sponsored during-work events nearly wiped out.

Pay tended to be "competitive," at best.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet truly anonymous feedback and input from employees: current methods tend to identify people by e-mail address or IP address

not bad for work life balance

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
Wellesley Hills, MA

I have been working at Sun Life

Proswork life balance is the main thing - just about everyone is on the same wavelength about this, so it doesn't seem to vary that much by department

Consonce you hit mid career, opportunities for advancement evaporate
if you're at all ambitious, you'll have one foot out the door

Advice to Senior Managementcommunication from senior management about recent layoffs was terrible
their ready shoot aim approach has made everyone nervous about both job security and stewardship of the company
platitudes about how talented people are don't help

Career cruise control...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Wellesley Hills, MA

I have been working at Sun Life

ProsExcellent work/life balance, low stress job, good training (depending on department), some wonderful people, good benefits, good vacation.

Great place for people with families that want a pretty steady 9-5 job and stress free environment.
Company is financial more stable than others in the insurance industry.

ConsPeople are promoted based on legacy and loyalty to management; don't expect to be promoted unless you give your time (3 years +). Not a great place for <30 as most of employees are older, brand is not well recognized in the US but company is working on improving that. People who try to make the organization better are not recognized as everyone is trying to make the status quo and leave the office by 5. Too many cross-department conflicts.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut out 2-3 layers of middle management and empower employees to share ideas. Reward based on merit and not loyalty and legacy. Recruit more people out of good school (establish graduate recruitment).
