I worked at Sun Microsystems as an intern for more than a year
Pros – Junior employees given advanced responsibilities
Most business units staffed by thought-leaders in their verticals
Employees given carte blanche to pursue their own initiatives
Widespread adoption of work from home
Most business units able to iterate rapidly
Cons – Highly political corporate culture with little meritocracy despite plethora of talent
Little stability with most employees more preoccupied with job security than their actual job
Bias towards engineering has never been married to successful sales execution
Lack of brand awareness in SMB/SME/LE environments
Executive leadership apparently bent on running company into the ground
Advice to Senior Management – Quit and hand the reins over to people that know what they're doing
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – - The opportunity to work with capable, creative professionals.
- Learning new skills.
- Doing work on a large scale, involving global communities and thousands of end user customers.
- Challenging, interesting work.
Cons – - Employee ranking system on a curve - couldn't (per the ranking sytem) have all excellent or all poor workers in a group.
- Complacency by some employees resulting in decreased productivity, morale.
- Inexperienced senior management after Scott McNealy was no longer at the reins. Management by whim in some cases. Haven't worked there since oracle purchased the company.
Advice to Senior Management – Manage to a greater degree based on results and customer feedback.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
