Menlo Park, CA

Former Employee – worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsI loved working at Sun, was always proud to call myself a Sun employee. Liked all of the projects I worked on, and got along with all of the people I worked with. Had good friends there, many of whom I stay in touch with.

ConsOracle took over and there was no way I wanted to be a part of that. Many of us heard about how Oracle treated their employees. Half of the people on my previous, and then current, teams left before the acquisition was finalized.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to the new management at Sun/Oracle is this: respect your employees, compensate them competitively, recognize good work, and above all show that you appreciate them. No self-respecting person really wants to work there.

Current Employee – been working at Sun Microsystems

ProsLooks good on a resume.
Great rank and file with a very high intelligence level and a lot of drive.
Engineering staff at the contributor level is as good as it gets.

ConsPay and promotion have nothing to do with your achievement and contribution and are based on ones loyalty and servitude to your / upper management, whose motivation is based solely on their own advancement and power. Of course there is some level of that in "every" organization...at least at the location I was at for seven years, it is detrimental to the operations when the good ol' boys and girls network is the only way to advance.

Advice to Senior ManagementLarry taking over was probably the best thing that could have happened, but a good thorough house cleaning from mid-level on up is in order.

Sunnyvale, CA

Former Employee – worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsGreat for engineering, good people. Very open work environment and good work and family balance. They have good perks like ESPP, 401k, health insurance.

ConsSenior management seemed to have very little insight on how to run the business aspects of the company. Missed many golden opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep some perspective on the business side of things. Keep track of chanign trends in the industry. Do not micro manage.

Menlo Park, CA

Former Employee – worked at Sun Microsystems

ProsWealth of resources, telecommuting and flex office policy means you can work from anywhere, lots of opportunities for learning and taking on extra responsibilities.

ConsThe resources are burdened with bureaucracy, because so many people telecommute, the buildings feel ghostly and you never know where people are on a given day.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot sure how things have changed since the Oracle acquisition, but quicker turn around times for inter department tasks would have been helpful.

ProsGreat technology. Great benefits.
A great place to learn state of the art technologies and techniques.

ConsSmall pawn in a lrge empire. Work often went unnoticed. There is a lot of excess brainpower walking the halls in search of a project to work on. Maybe too much time between projects because departments have too rigid boundaries.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate more cross pollination of projects, technology and ideas.
