    Pros

Collegiality of Employees, good upside salary potential.

    Cons

Unreasonable expectations particularly when business went sour. No shared sacrifice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management lacked vision. Hardware is commodity. Software and services, as evidenced by recent history, is the area where companies can profit and grow.

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Direct management was very supportive in career development, work/life balance, and colaboration. There was plenty of room to move your career around in the company once you made the right contacts. The ability to work virtually was an excellent benifit.

    Cons

You spent half your time fighting internal battles to try to get any work done. It was difficult sometimes to get to the right person to get the job done. Interal processes made it difficult to do business in a timely manner. Senior level management was disconnected with the field and placed importance on processes that weren't revenue generating and held no value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back in touch with your teams in the field so you can find out what they truly need to get business done. Stop implementing tools and processes then not follow through only to try again a few years later. It's a waste of time and training.

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Growth opportunities and flexible work space - from either home or the office.

    Cons

Senior management needs to hire more people from out side of the company instead of promoting each other to positions that they have no background experience doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think more about the bottom line and being profitable.

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Industry leading technology/Innovation and entrepreneurial spirit-company -well positioned with open source products-JAVA, MYSQL, Solaris 10, ZFS-just need to monetize this IP. Benefits are good and many smart people. X64 sales are driving business in new areas including linux, windows and VMware-but margins are poor. The challenge is to monetize open source IP and turn it into real $$$. Cloud computing will take years to recognize any real monetary benefit but need it to compete.

    Cons

very bureacratic, political-senior management messaging is missing and the board of directors
has shown little leadership. Now that Southeastern Asset Mgt owns 25%, you can expect changes-hopefully for the better. Stock price has gone down the tubes since the reverse stock split and morale is low due
    to uncertainty and announced layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Never forget that people are the lifeblood of the company-need to reward them for performance. Otherwise, you will quickly find yourself with only mediocre people that will only be able to accomplish mediocre things. Cost cutting can help in the short term, but you are seriously harming the prospects for Sun's future.

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Cant say there any "good" reasons at the present other than the fact that this company generally cares about its employees and treats them well. It was more so under Scott McNealy

    Cons

Lack of opportunity, aging products and lay-offs around every corner!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop retreading the middle managers that have not performed and better/greater accountability for these managers.

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Great technology company, R&D are always thinking. They encourage remote telecommuting, maybe too much sometimes. Very “Green” Environment friendly. They encourage and promote volunteerism in the community.

    Cons

Mediocrity is king. I do not know if it’s the constant bloodletting, but no one has any fire in the belly. They are lead by technology, and never ask the customer what they want or need. They create a piece of hardware and say, let the industry figure out how they want to use it? None of the business units talk or COOPERATE with each other. "Reliable" Internal data is impossible to come by, everyone can have their own web page and put any MISinformation they want out there, and product managers put NO information out there! Management is so focused on OPEX, they cut their nose off to spite their face.
