Pros
Fair and understanding; provided advancement opportunities; willingness to train
Cons
Layoffs; unfortunately this hurt a lot of people in the community
Pros
Sun has very friendly working environment and generous holidays and vacation plans. Sun also give engineers much freedom to think and take chances.
Cons
The area that Sun should have improve is to have better business plan for the overall company. For this reason, the company wasn't successful and therefore employees received less than average overall compensation
Advice to Senior Management
The area that Sun should have improve is to have better business plan for the overall company.
The company should also have better overall management accountability.
Pros
Sun Microsystems respects employees. Good place to work..
Cons
Incompetence of high management made Sun set.
Pros
innovation, transparency, smart people, incredible vision
Cons
sr management in an echo chamber, smart people not promoted
Advice to Senior Management
learn to listen instead of talk
Pros
Work life balance.
Great technology
Cons
Sites away from HQ need to be given critical components.
Advice to Senior Management
improvement required. Need to be aligned and swift to market needs.
Pros
The offices were not cubics, so it was very comfortable to work there. The work / life balance was excellent.
Cons
Communication between departments was not as easy, especially the service department was oversea. Sales and services were not as strong as engineering.
Advice to Senior Management
Open mind to support and cross communications with other departments. Move oversea service department to local locations. Do better services after sales.
Pros
Sun had a talent for hiring some of the most quirky and unique people in the industry, something that contributed to the diverse culture of this company
Cons
The culture was also misused causing the downfall.
Pros
A track record of amazing contributions, a wide range of technologies and innumerable was to contribute. The mix of both hardware and software made Sun a very unique environment.
Cons
Very poor management in terms of communication. Goals were set haphazardly almost reckless. Unclear and unowned decision-making. No one wanted to be the one to say no, yet no one wanted to be the one to say yes. Sales force incentives needed to be set by profit, not by deal size.
Advice to Senior Management
Reduce the number of managers and layers between the workers and the VPs. Get the process under control. Never use the process as a substitution for decision making
Pros
-The people I was working with were great.
-Provided me with a lot of valuable info
-Was able to maintain a number of connections during my time working
Cons
- Day to day activities get boring at times.
- Work can become repetitive and sometimes too mundane for my taste
Advice to Senior Management
- Create a better work variety for employees and increase bonuses
- Introduce some new techniques in implementing data into the system
Pros
I loved working at Sun, was always proud to call myself a Sun employee. Liked all of the projects I worked on, and got along with all of the people I worked with. Had good friends there, many of whom I stay in touch with.
Cons
Oracle took over and there was no way I wanted to be a part of that. Many of us heard about how Oracle treated their employees. Half of the people on my previous, and then current, teams left before the acquisition was finalized.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice to the new management at Sun/Oracle is this: respect your employees, compensate them competitively, recognize good work, and above all show that you appreciate them. No self-respecting person really wants to work there.
