    Pros

Work from home flexibility, great work-life balance, no travel was required, the pay and benefits were excellent, team members were nice to work with, the Broomfield campus was very nice with a cafeteria providing a variety of menu/cuisine options.

    Cons

Distributed teams in varying time zones made it difficult to get everyone on the phone for a meeting at the same time.

    Advice to Management

Directors, VPs and other execs needed to co-mingle with the worker bees more than they did. Come down from their ivory tower every so often to see what was really going on in their organization.

    Pros

The people were the #1 reason that made working at Sun for 21 years a fantastic experience. We were all mostly young, smart people at the start and grew together, developing some of the core technology that powers the Internet and other tech.

    Cons

Oracle bought Sun ;-( because Sun senior management didn't know how to run a business.

    Advice to Management

Port-mortem - you should have never allowed Mr. Ponytail to run the business. His brilliant strategy of giving everything away for free in the hopes that one day a customer would want to pay for something didn't make a lot of business sense to many of us.

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, lots of autonomy to get stuff done

    Cons

Tools many loose canons, poor execution of strategy

  6. A positive professional relationship with a dynamic company.

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Dynamic technology with hardware, software and service delivery industry leading professionals. The corporation was generous to a fault with stock options and a regular bonus plan, you always felt wanted.

    Cons

It was a pretty demanding environment that required a large time commit. It was a constant struggle to make sure the work-life balance was protected. The company demands could and did consume many employees.

    Advice to Management

Stay focused on technology, but don't forget about the well-being of your employees.

    Pros

Flexible working conditions, ability to work from home. There was a work life balance. Lots of perks, and things to help make life and work much better. There was plenty of chances to get training, from technical training to soft skills training.

    Cons

Sun never really knew how to monetize products, when we were at the center of the tech bubble we wound up giving away more service than we were paid for. The downer part of working for Sun was having to explain what we did whenever someone wanted to know who I worked for. Also Sun had about 10 years of lay offs each quarter which lead to pretty bad morale for those of us working in the trenches.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the money, don't forget how to be human.

    Pros

cowboy club, great opportunities, liberty, flexibility and room to get things done. Great for engineers but also for sales & marketing.

    Cons

more and more politics over the years. difficulties to get things done on a local level, more and more sign offs and signatures needed at Corp level for local stuff. Less room to get things done and make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what happens in the field and not only in the US, they’re the ones bringing in the money

    Pros

Work life balance, company vision ahead of its time, opportunities to learn and contribute

    Cons

poor accountability, long project cycles, not enough killed deadwood projects

    Advice to Management

Execs- heed what trench workers tell you.

    Pros

Great benefits, excellent co-workers that were smart, competent, and fun to work with

    Cons

Greed and self-centered attitudes were very prominent at Sun

    Advice to Management

Don't just live to move up the ladder, work with people with the perspective that every day counts, not just the future
