Great place to work, too bad it's gone

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsSun Microsystems was a really great place to work from many perspectives: real offices, with doors and walls that went to the ceilings, great corporate culture, its embrace of telecommuting, the beautiful (Rivermark) campus, above-average compensation.

ConsI wish Sun's executives had been able to make the hard decisions (cutting people's pet but money-losing, non-strategic projects in favor of profitable or strategic projects) that were necessary to survive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSun Microsystems is gone, so offering advice to management is kind of pointless now, isn't it?

    An amazing company, much missed

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsEngineering driven organization that took good care of it's people. Lots of perks, great people, fun to work at.

ConsEngineering driven organization that took bad care of it's products. Never really profitable outside it's core business of hardware.

Advice to Senior ManagementSoftware is just as important as hardware.

    Experience in Sun

SQA Engineer (Former Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsFree, learn new techs, open, can work at home, life and work balance.

ConsRevenue is declining, losing market, cannot saw X86 opportunities

Advice to Senior ManagementTargeting to market, not tech

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Life at Sun was a blast! Good people, many lessons to learn. Scott was the best, bar none.

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) Mountain View, CA

ProsIn the early years it was a lot of hard work, but also so much fun. We banded together, beer busts, water fights, April Fools and all. Worked hard and played hard.

ConsBy and large the planets could have been a good thing, however it fell apart. Egos somehow always get in the way, folks somehow cannot do good work for the sake of all. Too bad, Sun was a magical place until people's egos get in the way. Those long haired, ponytail types somehow managed to take down the castle.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis would be a general statement to any corporate entity: HR is for management and not for the employees. Too bad. HR should be an unbiased source where everyone feels safe. One should never have to be concerned that the boss will always win because s/he is in management.
