Great place to work, too bad it's gone

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsSun Microsystems was a really great place to work from many perspectives: real offices, with doors and walls that went to the ceilings, great corporate culture, its embrace of telecommuting, the beautiful (Rivermark) campus, above-average compensation.

ConsI wish Sun's executives had been able to make the hard decisions (cutting people's pet but money-losing, non-strategic projects in favor of profitable or strategic projects) that were necessary to survive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSun Microsystems is gone, so offering advice to management is kind of pointless now, isn't it?

    An amazing company, much missed

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsEngineering driven organization that took good care of it's people. Lots of perks, great people, fun to work at.

ConsEngineering driven organization that took bad care of it's products. Never really profitable outside it's core business of hardware.

Advice to Senior ManagementSoftware is just as important as hardware.

Low morale, lot of internal politics

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsI worked for the Micro-electronics division. Pros would be flexible work culture, rooms instead of cubicles, easy going co-workers.

ConsLot of internal politics, in-efficient management, lengthy and often times flawed design cycles, non-convergence productization, low morale amongst engineers, non-competitive salaries.

Advice to Senior ManagementBoost the morale of the engineers by addressing their concerns, offering them competitive salaries.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A great company to work at !

Partner Sales (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsOpen, innovative, communicative, rewarding company. Many products currently used by the IT global community were originated at sun, java and Solaris just to name a few

ConsSun had to do much more on the long term viability and unfortunately failed in doing so

Advice to Senior ManagementNow part of Oracle, Oracle management knows very well how to drive their business. Sun has great assets, mainly people. Keeping these people will help Oracle to keep sun customers and to actually gain more customers.
