I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company culture. Working with many talented and super great people.

    Cons

Purchased by Oracle, the culture was changed to political and mean. Lots nasty people migrated in from Oracle.

    Pros

At Sun, staff treated with respect - from IT to secretaries to engineers. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Sun: not the best strategic vision. Not the best linkage between marketing and engineering.

I worked at Sun Microsystems as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Contracted with Sun for half a year and enjoyed the team spirit, professionalism, and the ease they provided while working remotely.Would work a contract for this company again in a heartbeat.

    Cons

Occasionally unable to reach the coordinator at times, but since they managed multiple projects, it was satisfactorily handled by their assistant.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Sun Microsystems was a really great place to work from many perspectives: real offices, with doors and walls that went to the ceilings, great corporate culture, its embrace of telecommuting, the beautiful (Rivermark) campus, above-average compensation.

    Cons

I wish Sun's executives had been able to make the hard decisions (cutting people's pet but money-losing, non-strategic projects in favor of profitable or strategic projects) that were necessary to survive.

    Advice to Management

Sun Microsystems is gone, so offering advice to management is kind of pointless now, isn't it?

    Advice to Management

    none

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Engineering driven organization that took good care of it's people. Lots of perks, great people, fun to work at.

    Cons

Engineering driven organization that took bad care of it's products. Never really profitable outside it's core business of hardware.

    Advice to Management

Software is just as important as hardware.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time

    Pros

I worked for the Micro-electronics division. Pros would be flexible work culture, rooms instead of cubicles, easy going co-workers.

    Cons

Lot of internal politics, in-efficient management, lengthy and often times flawed design cycles, non-convergence productization, low morale amongst engineers, non-competitive salaries.

    Advice to Management

Boost the morale of the engineers by addressing their concerns, offering them competitive salaries.
