Allows me to work and grow with an exceptional editorial team. Stable schedule, the ability to work on my major and the opportunity to grow in one of the best newspaper companies in Florida.

    Cons

2 months hiatus between the end of the high school season and the start of a new one.

    Pros

Fairly good freedom and your own boss without too much micro managing. Not too strict on employee rules and easy workplace atmosphere.

    Cons

At a loss at what to do for the future. No sales leads, disorganized. Basically throw you in the water and see if you can swim.

    Pros

Good benefits, ample vacation time/personal days.

    Cons

No loyalty - management cut my entire department with no warning. Some of us had been there for 15 years, in the same position. Also worked terrible hours, often expected to stay overtime until 3 AM. Terrible work/life balance.

    Pros

There aren't any pros at this company...none at all

    Cons

Too many managers, Plenty of Micro-managing. They only promote who they want. The ones that actually work hard don't get any kind of recognition, they just give them more work. No room for advancement, no raises given. They are continually laying people off, so everyday you have no idea if your department is next...the moral is very low...do not apply to this company

    Advice to Management

Management doesn't listen to anything that is said, so this would be a waste of time

    Pros

Gain experience, learn how to work with many kinds of people

    Cons

Low pay, no job security, lack of resources and ambition to innovate,

    Advice to Management

If you don't think out of the box, you won't survive. Treat editorial employees like human beings, and you will strengthen your workforce. Dignity and respect go a long way. Making people do more for less only reaps short-term gains.

    Pros

You have the opportunity to learn many new tasks that can really beef up your resume Free to be as creative as you want Overall work atmosphere is enjoyable

    Cons

Extremely long hours with no compensation Very hard to take a vacation lasting longer than three days Management will sympathize with you but will not offer any solution

    Advice to Management

Increase the pay for your editors (they earn it!) and help employees comes up with solutions to their work problems instead of just being that shoulder to cry on

    Pros

There is a strong sense of family. Co-workers that care about their peers and are willing to go the extra mile.

    Cons

No growth or advancement opportunities. Poor decision making on the part of middle and senior managers. Low morale due to layoffs and indifference by upper management.

    Advice to Management

Before deciding on a plan of action, think it through before it's implemented. Saving $100 today may cost $10,000 a month or two later. Open lines of communication with your employees and stop trying to bs them. They know better and so should you.

    Pros

Slightly better pay for graphic artist jobs. Full health benefits and the ability to accrue paid vacation time. Other job opportunities in the company to apply for. Day or nighttime shifts.

    Cons

The company offers very little or no raises at an employee's yearly review. New positions are very commonly treated as lateral moves so there's no extra pay for transferring. There is a lot of micro-management. Morale is low as the newspaper industry in general is suffering.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on new money-generating ideas and stop bombarding the employees with processes and procedures. Also consider offering raises to all your employers rather than just bonuses for upper management.

    Pros

Working hour flexibility, enormous commissions and bonuses for sales, lower level managers are nice to work with.

    Cons

Lack of minority & women diversity in management and salaried jobs, non-sales employees don't receive bonuses or salary raises.

    Advice to Management

Be more accepting of change and stop resisting it. Allow new ideas to flourish. The philosophies that worked 15 years ago no longer work today.
