OK Company with limited career growth opportunity

    I worked at SunGard

    Pros

Good salary, flexible hours and work from home opportunities (for some), good work-life balance, some very talented, driven and friendly people, a drive to move to lean and agile project management and engineering practices, nice bright and modern offices (before move out of Midtown).

    Cons

Benefits squeezed down year after year, little to no bonus payments, flat structure leading to limited career growth opportunities, some staff were not up to par but somehow managed to avoid staff cuts while talented people were lost, questionable standard of work from offshore office, little real synergy between product groups or business units.

SunGard is not as well known in the industry as it should be, and where it is known it is because of one specific product and not for the company as a whole. Working for SunGard doesn't come with as high a reputation that it deserves.

SunGard is a sales focused company. If you are not working directly in sales you will be second-class in the company.

This is a very large company and senior management can appear to be out of touch with individual contributors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more to promote the SunGard brand as a whole. Keep a high bar when hiring and don't be afraid to get rid of dead wood (but make sure it is the right people). Think long term when moving work offshore; is it really the right thing to move work offshore when it takes two to do the job of one onshore person and quality is compromised? Don't scrimp on benefits and bonuses; you will lose talent to competitors. Have a consistent and fair work from home policy. Don't focus so much on sales as a primary goal; focus on quality first and sales will come.

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

SunGard offers decent work-life balance, work from home, and stability.

    Cons

Biggest drawback is lack of career growth and development. The recent efforts to promote career growth has been superficial.
Salary stays stagnant and many people are leaving the firm as the economy improves and opportunities arise outside the firm
Also, Asset Management group is very disorganized, lacking strategy and vision. Many competing products with an army of car-salesman type management.
Lastly its glorifies the above breed of car salesman type personality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

1.Create a career track for existing employees
    2. Create a strategy , vision and improved communication between products
    2. Fire incompetent management and sales staff and pay market rate for your existing performing employees

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of product lines catering to just about every market. Globally recognized name (can be a pro or con).

    Cons

SunGard grows by acquisition but does not do a great job of integrating those new businesses. The senior people in each acquired unit tend to have their eye on the door or on a more senior role elsewhere at SG and you are left with a lot of C+ talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through on some of the integration of the acquired businesses.

    Pros

Nice perks: Can work from home from time to time, great gifts on your 5-10-15 years at work.

    Smart developers

Constantly improving the release cycle and following the best practices.

    Cons

Re-organization can happen frequently so this can be stressful.

Depending on the above, you can have a manager that doesn't share the same vision or ideas at all with the previous one so you will need to adapt.

Sales People Treated like "Pawns" towards The Management's Quota and Club Reservations

Current Employee - Senior Sales Executive in New York, NY
Current Employee - Senior Sales Executive in New York, NY

I have been working at SunGard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They serve Starbucks coffee...and have a nice surplus of legal pads and pens.

    Cons

Sales Compensation and Quotas are not in line with the Industry trends and the "solution selling" messaging the company subscribes to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to actually listen to the Sales People on what is going on and work accordingly to streamline instead of making "gut" like decisions or picking favorites when driving opportunities.

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - The culture is pretty lax, no micro-management
    - Work/ Life Balance, decent vacation
-Easy for commute for folks living on Island
-Most people are friendly except few in IT and admin

    Cons

-This place is dead end place where your professional career dies. You will be doing the same job even after 10 years of service
    - The business unit management is pretty shortsighted and does NOT invest in their employees
    - They promote people who belong to the long island "group"
    - Also, the top management leading this business changes every six months

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Provide career path
-Have clear strategy for organization and employee growth
-Pay employee at par with the industry

    Pros

Some of the folks that work at Sungard are enjoyable to work with. The hours when employed were nice and convenient.

    Cons

The Management is absolutely heartless. When Sungard acquired Comdisco, they of course promised the world. They decided to fire people the week before christmas. Made a comment to my manager which he didn't like. F' him. I hate this place.

    Retire

I have been working at SunGard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

wages can be competitive and there's a good chance you'll run into some excellent people all throughout the organization that are great at their job and excellent to work with. They do attract some good talent.

    Cons

Annual reorgs for no apparent reason. unless you're upper management or sales you won't be raking in big bonuses and perks but they are there. Massive drive to move everything possible to Florida, but again unless you're high enough up relocation help isn't available. Layoffs/downsizing/rightsizing seem to be happening more and more frequently with a big push to get and stay very lean. Work Life balance has become non-existant for many, depending on your role/department. Benefits get worse and worse each year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the company is TOO lean, with many co-workers working 6 days a week just to keep up, with no compensation for doing so. Forcing older workers out in favor of hiring someone with no experience for less in FL is seriously draining the knowledge base of Sungard's products and it is being reflected in the increasingly unhappy customer base.

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Opportunity for promotion/recognition if you put in the work. Vacation days above average for the US. Could get more sick days.

    Cons

However, in terms of actual positions to go up the chain, it is limited unless you count on employee turnover. It is more and more acting like a "big company". Bureaucracy is growing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basics. Streamline the bureaucracy.

    Pros

Knowledgeable people, global presence, name recognition

    Cons

On-going cost and benefits reduction program (going on for 5 years), lack of investment into product development, no collaboration between product groups, impossible to fulfill quotas, new commission plan has lower payouts, high turn-over, just announced up-coming head count reduction because they have not met thier financial projections, management is only focused on thier budget and spreadsheets,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your products and people. You neglect both
