It is a company with great solar technology but mid level management is poor. Understaffed.

    Business Development (Current Employee)
    Richmond, CA

    ProsBest technology in solar panels
    Very smart people work there
    Good industry reputation
Likely to be standing after solar wars because of Total ownership

ConsToo many silos - people don't talk to people in other internal groups
Too much reliance on contract workers. The quality of projects being built is often poor.
Quarterly results more important than building a strong team. Constant layoffs when things get tight.
    Too much turn over
Some mid-level managers (director level in particular) are HORRIBLE. This is especially true in North America Commercial sales.
Projects are understaffed so some projects are turning out badly.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter employee support. Consider the impact on good employees of bad managers. Rely less on contract workers. I am seeing the results of some of your built projects and it is bad.

Advice to Senior Managementstaff projects adequately or axe them.

    Exciting industry, immature company

User Experience Design Manager (Former Employee)
    Richmond, CA

ProsGreat to be in the renewable energy industry
Great to be working for one of the leading quality products in the market
Energetic people who do what it takes to get it done
SunPower has a lot of credibility in the big solar arena and has great potential to burst out and really become big

ConsImmaturity in many respects - company is still growing and learning.
Don't get the impression that staff are that important and you always feel replaceable.
The company is up against stiff competition in an unpredictable and growing market. Could go well, could go badly.

    Very flat organization

    Business Development (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsOne of the most important points is that SunPower has a very flat organization, enabling you to exchange opinions with everyone at every level.

ConsSunPower doesn't have many possibilities of job rotations at international level which would be a very interesting possibiliy - opportunity

Great learning environment, poor management practices

    Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Richmond, CA

ProsThe Richmond office is a beautiful place to work and I like the people with whom I work. SP makes great products.

Cons"As a contractor, there is a very low probability that you will get hired full time." This is what I was told recently by my manager. Once contractors reach their 1500 hour limit (as dictated by CA labor policy and assuming full time work) SP cannot renew their contract; they must wait 3 months before they can hire back that person. Otherwise SP will find a replacement. SP has and will continue to loose good people due to this "policy". Also, there is very little training here, you are on your own with regard to services and resources you may need to do your job.

Advice to Senior ManagementProfit isn't everything. Without people there is no profit. Eventually your hiring practices and retention failings will catch up with you. How do you expect to grow revenues without investing in your operations? Fire the CMO and hire someone who understands digital marketing and brand nuance. Currently Sunpower does not have a brand. You think its the products but its not. Its more akin to investment services like an IRA or 401k.
