I have been working at SunPower (San Jose, CA)

    Pros

Awesome growth industry that provides oppertunity to radically change the way the world is powered by disrupting the fossil fuel industry with cheap renewable power

    Cons

The culture of the company is very focused on working very long hours in a demanding environment where it's expected that you are totally focused on your job

  2.

Huge ability to have an impact and greater breadth and complexity than lots of mid-cap & solar companies.

I have been working at SunPower (San Jose, CA) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Challenging work, wide breadth, very diverse business units, will be pushed to perform at a much higher level than many other companies. Great focus on constant improvement. Global company with residential, commercial and utility segments.

    Cons

You have to set boundaries for your version of work-life balance, and we will try to stretch them.

Keep the focus on growing customer focus and service capability.

I worked at SunPower (San Jose, CA) as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Sunpower provided a great environment to work in. The people were very friendly and everyone is dedicated to making solar energy a real viable alternative for the future of energy production.

    Cons

Sometimes the work can get pretty mundane. The company is large, and so there is some red tape to get through before work can commence. Also, since it is large, sometimes your work is very focused and does not really let you learn a lot.

I worked at SunPower (San Jose, CA) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Many brilliant minds at work in one place. Exposure to a global team environment. Feel good about environmental improvement work.

    Cons

Process can bog down progress. Politics can interfere with advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The bottoms up approach is a wonderful way to instill responsibility in others and promote growth. However there is a need for a real connection to be made interdepartmentally. I'm sure things have changed since I left.

It is a company with great solar technology but mid level management is poor. Understaffed.

I have been working at SunPower (San Jose, CA) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Best technology in solar panels
    Very smart people work there
    Good industry reputation
Likely to be standing after solar wars because of Total ownership

    Cons

Too many silos - people don't talk to people in other internal groups
Too much reliance on contract workers. The quality of projects being built is often poor.
Quarterly results more important than building a strong team. Constant layoffs when things get tight.
    Too much turn over
Some mid-level managers (director level in particular) are HORRIBLE. This is especially true in North America Commercial sales.
Projects are understaffed so some projects are turning out badly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better employee support. Consider the impact on good employees of bad managers. Rely less on contract workers. I am seeing the results of some of your built projects and it is bad.

Energetic people who do what it takes to get it done
SunPower has a lot of credibility in the big solar arena and has great potential to burst out and really become big

    Cons

Immaturity in many respects - company is still growing and learning.
Don't get the impression that staff are that important and you always feel replaceable.
The company is up against stiff competition in an unpredictable and growing market. Could go well, could go badly.
