Pros
Fair amount of autonomy.
Pay is comparable to others in the industry
Focus on on-going sales training
Annual surveys to gauge employee satisfaction
Cons
Bonuses are adversely impacted by the firms performance even if your line of business exceeds goals.
Lots of talk about client first but very clearly it's a firm first culture
Pros
Lots of change happening, new management philosophy and approach
Cons
Perhaps a little slow to implement great ideas
Pros
It is a strong company with a great brand. There is a seeming large amount of personal growth potential as well.
Cons
While there is seemingly a lot of room for personal growth, if you get stuck in a retail position they groom you to move up the ladder even if you have no desire to go from Teller, to FSR, to Branch Manager. I regularly applied for positions with corporate and never received any response.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide alternatives to the standard retail ladder, especially when a college educated person takes a job in your retail positions. I wanted to use the retail position as a foot in the door, instead I was pigeonholed.
Pros
nice people but not very organized
Cons
declining bonus structure even for top performers
Pros
Good benefits.
Excellent logistical support.
Coworkers can be fun.
Solid Pay.
Cons
Bullies in management
Process police drain the life out of you.
Technology is behind the times.
Fear of change.
Fear of developers because they represent change.
Most development work is outsourced. Expect to clean up the mess.
You lack the tools and access required to do your job.
Expect to work on the weekends.
Not very coordinated.
You get kicked in the dick by management for trying to help. How many times can that happen before you get sick of it?
You must be extremely precise in your communication. Choose your words carefully.
Its better to not act than to act.
Not a good place to learn.
Fear based management.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees. I don't think that happens very much.
Pros
Good reputation, strong financials, conservative environment, some good managers
Cons
Glacial innovation, byzantine internal structure
Advice to Senior Management
Truly encourage innovation. That means sometimes living with mistakes made in the course of trying new things. If all you do is punish mistakes, you end up with a work force that avoids any risk and nothing gets done. Secondly, just fire everyone in the EDS group. They are useless. Working with them is like dealing with mafiosos who also work for the government.
Pros
There are many opportunities to grow as long as you do your part.
Cons
If you start off with a lower pay, it will be very hard to get more money.
Advice to Senior Management
Make a more fair pay scale.
Pros
Friendly co-workers. Good working hours and vacations.
Cons
Not very much training opportunities.
Pros
The pay at SunTrust is much greater than the other banking jobs that I've held.
Cons
In my particular branch, it seems like the management staff is constantly trying to put you down and not effectively coaching staff to ensure that everyone is fully knowledgeable on SunTrust as a whole and on products and services. Although I've worked at a couple of other banks before, each bank has a different way of doing things and you would think that there would be adequate training to know how SunTrust operates. I am often left to try to find answers to questions on the internal website, which I might add is not organized at all, since the staff does not care to help at all.
The system that we use for our transactions, BancStar, is extremely old and out of date. WaMu before it was converted over to Chase had a better operating system and even that was pretty out of date.
Advice to Senior Management
The staff is what will make your branch profitable and generate positive results. If you ignore them, offer no help, and constantly put them down, then the employees will be in no mood to want to do well and your branch will suffer. Also, please treat your part-time and peak-time tellers better. Although they are not there all day and only a few days a week, they are a crucial part of the operation.
Pros
Flexible work arrangements, allow working remotely.
Generous vacation days
Status quo is the norm, overly laid back.
Good place to be if you have no aspirations and just waiting out retirement and don't want to be challenged.
Cons
Cronyism, non-merit based promotion is the norm. Poor leadership/management. No career path. Need to get comp coming in. Typically hire external talent over internal talent. Does not groom or prepare/grow internal talent for promotions (cronys).
Advice to Senior Management
Put action behind your words/rhetoric. It's past time to clean house of all the ineffective and zero value add senior management (which is most of you).
