I worked at Suncor as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Worked at Suncor as a co-op student. Was privileged to have a good boss/mentor. Lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in within the organization which is refreshing. Good work-life balance

    Cons

Lots of bureaucracy - takes a long time for things to get done.

I worked at Suncor as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Suncor had a lot of opportunities to learn new skills and they give you great exposure to various aspects of the company. They have a commitment to safety that was above my expectations and the wages were pretty competitive for a co-op position

    Cons

The overall large structure of the company makes it hard in terms of organization. The future outlook for employment is incredibly competitive even for those with previous work experience there. I've also found their follow-up skills very lacking with recent interviews I've had there even when they assure you they will get back to you either way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I can't think of any improvements right now, I think they are on the right track.

I worked at Suncor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Suncor has some great people and job opportunities within its vertically integrated multi-divisional structure. The company is positively involved in the communities it has operations in, has some great soft compensation elements, including matching charitable donations, fitness allowance, and generous vacation policy. The company is committed to Safety in the work place and has baked that commitment into the corporate culture.

    Cons

Suncor talks the talk of meritocracy, but walks the walk of mediocrity. This is evidenced in the poorly executed annual goal setting and review process, little to no interest from middle and senior management in process improvements, and weak follow through on company wide initiatives. There is very little work-life balance parity between teams within a function.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set a mid to long term corporate vision and culture that the whole company can buy into and follow through on the plan. Emphasize results & performance based review process, especially for middle management and follow up with consequences for non-performing employees.

    Pros

Lot of opportunities available for career development.
Always looking to lead in the functional area.

    Cons

Need to be assertive - even with solid career development and performance review processes, you need to be very clear about what you want to accomplish.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The size of Suncor lends itself well to many interesting and varied career development opportunities. There are many good opportunities for engaging work in which one could learn and grow every day.

Depending on the role and responsibilities, the tempo can be face paced, which many people enjoy.

The financial compensation can be more then fair, depending on the role and responsponsibilities.

    Cons

The cons are that each individual must set boundaries. The boundaries must be set to protect family life, physical health, and mental health. This is a challenge in any company but is magnified in a company which is fast pace and "results driven".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lets continue to tell the Suncor and Oilsands story. Those in opposition to the development of oilsands are very vocal. We need to be as enthusiastic and vocal proponents of responsible development.

The product we provide society is needed and valued. We need to continue to remind folks of the value added to their personal lives. We need to educate them on the Suncor culture of safety and responsible development.

    Pros

A great company with opportunities for growth and development.. Interesting work.

    Cons

Some staff promoted to leadership positions before they are ready/capable. Cliquey environment with employees competing among each other not the best way to establish efficiencies and teamwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more permanent staff and steer away from hiring so many temps.
