I worked at Suncor as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

I was treated with respect and given interesting work. Great way to get out in the field and learn more about the oil & gas industry. Great coworkers and the busses out to site were a great nap in the morning!

    Cons

At times my work got rather repetitive, so some days dragged. It also would have been nice to get out in the field more. Being a coop you don't have the same opportunities as the EITs but that's not unusual or unexpected.

I worked at Suncor as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Working at Suncor (in Fort McMurray) has always been a pleasure. They paid extremely well. By that i mean they paid me more than what an entry level engineer makes anywhere in Canada. They paid for my apartment as well as relocation. They stress on development of their coops. It is not like other paid internships where you just show up at work and get paid without any significant contribution. All co-ops are living in the same building, so it is quite fun. I'll remember this work term forever at Suncor.

    Cons

really hard to say this, but sometimes it was difficult to work outside in Cold.

Overall Decent employer, Benefits lacking somewhat, Bonuses being removed

I have been working at Suncor

    Pros

Lots of room for advancement, Pays for career development, Base salary satisfactory

    Cons

Housing program is ten years and not worth the money paid out and penalties if you leave early, Base salary below industry average, Fly-in Fly-out not an option. Poor safety record. Culture is a production first atmosphere and is always being pushed on you.

    Pros

    Cons

Way too many levels of management, everything is driven by Production even though it often times makes doing your job properly very difficult.

I worked at Suncor as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

-Office setting is very friendly, you can go up to anyone and chat, they are more than willing to help in any area of your work or personal life
-Work/Life Balance is supported by everyone
-Very high pay, 6 weeks off per year right when you start full-time, year end bonuses (in my department at least)
    -Meaningful work given to interns
-Shifted to a different role in company within 2-5 years so employees aren't "bored"

    Cons

-Doesn't give you a chance to specialize in a specific area (e.g. finance) within the corporation if your focus is only one specific portion of a business. Eventually after working many years and gaining experience in various areas of business they will let you specialize in one area if there is a fit
-Have to be willing to relocate to anywhere in Canada to move up in company or be hired full time (mostly mobile to Calgary, but also heard of people working a few years in Edmonton, Vancouver, Montreal, Thunder Bay, Fort McMurray)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should look at some of their employees more thoroughly, really have to mess up bad to get fired, therefore some employees are doing the minimum or messing up a little and being transferred to another position which leads to the next employee having to fix their mistakes and ownership of mistake isn't properly tracked

I worked at Suncor full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lot of opportunities available for career development.
Always looking to lead in the functional area.

    Cons

Need to be assertive - even with solid career development and performance review processes, you need to be very clear about what you want to accomplish.

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Learning experiences. And words because I need more.

    Cons

Fort Mac is expensive. Managers lie about everything. Many people told unlimited OT here, there isn't. Planners are limited to 40hrs/month. This only applies to the pets of the leads, all others get less or nothing. No communication from higher ups on moves made. Pay is not top of the industry, only way to make money is the limited OT. Ever changing rules for planner expectations and duties. Currently removing 20K per year LOA and changing housing program in a bad way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure it out. Retaining people and safety is not your #1 or even #20 priority. This company is terribly run. Rich managers and above have no idea how hard the people who actually have to live in Fort Mac have it.
