I worked at Sungard Availability Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I received loads of experience and opportunity. A great group of people to work with on a day to day basis.

    Cons

Senior Management was constantly changing. SunGard companies were very adversarial, did not communicate or function well. Lack of synergies. Behind on technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the employee education and technology.

    Pros

Good Compensation/Benefits. Most managers are very flexible with working from home along with not being too stringent concerning strict daily hours - when you come into the office or leave for the day, as well as how long you take for lunch.
They try to have department activities outside of the office for team building.

    Cons

Not all departments/managers are created equal. Some are overworked & stress levels run very high - other departments have very little to do and appear to have a very stress free atmosphere.

I worked at Sungard Availability Services as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great team. Team was very intelligent and highly technical. Senior engineers are great mentors to junior engineers. It was a great place to work and learn. If you came in as a junior, you would gain experience at an exponential rate and leave almost a senior. Work from home policy was also very beneficial.

    Cons

Company is starting to outsource a lot of work to India. Many US engineers are being replaced, and the trend is only continuing in that direction. Heard of recent layoffs as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Outsourcing to India is not the solution!

    Cons

currently getting ready for an ipo or sell off, and the work load is ridiculousness.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better than being unemployed, but move on as soon as you can if you value your career.

    Pros

They have a high employee turn over. If you are reasonably competent getting a job here is easy, they are always hiring. If something isn't opened this week, wait a few, someone will quit. Pay and benefits are on par with other companies.

    Cons

The company is it's own worst enemy. The policies and procedures leave no one accountable, no one to blame, and no one in management wants to think. Even clearly defined problems go unresolved. The people who do go the extra mile are worked to death. Innovation is not rewarded, exploration is discouraged. The company is across the board years behind in technology. This is where you go if you want to kill your career. If you are unemployed it will get you back in the market, but leave as fast as you can.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is your company and they are your rules. You CAN change them. How is that 20% annual customer turn over working for you? How about employee churn? Think maybe you need to fix something?

    Pros

A large global company with solid benefits. Plenty of training opportunities. Possibility of working a part of the work week from home. Current management appears commited to improving tools and business processes.

    Cons

Salaries frozen for 2 years already. Company going through a significant out-of-country outsourcing push so some US IT positions are likely in jeopardy in the near future. Some of the benefits are being reduced to cut expenses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keeping salaries frozen for a long time is a good way to make the best people leave the company. Try to avoid that.
