I worked at Sungard Availability Services full-time

    Pros

Great folks at the "do-er" level. They haven't gotten a decent bonus in years but they are one of the hardest and most dedicated people that I can say are keeping the lights on.

    Cons

There's absolutely no career growth. Management still have no clue what is it that we do for our customers. There's way too many internal meetings, status updates on reports, operational matrices but what's missing is the desire to win new business. Sungard's biggest problem is there are way too many folks fighting internally to sell the same thing that we don't know what or who we sell it to. The customer simply goes to our competitor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop sugar-coating and telling how great we're. Or that "we are hiring aggressively." Or the latest one, we're 1.4Billion dollar company and we're excited about it. The reality is our margins are decreasing YoY. We are in no better shape and I have not seen anyone in management even look you in the eyes as say it's a great company! That's the reality. My take, we are "hiring aggressively" to back-fill the jobs for folks who have left. Honestly, I would not advise any of my friends to come work here.

    Pros

If you are a white young straight man with a little bit of light technical experience at another commercial data center, certainly you will be promoted quickly -- and well beyond your capabilities -- into a managerial role...where you will fit right in by being completely ineffectual and totally unaccountable.

    Cons

The firm is going to the knacker's yard, so do not bother even if you are desperate. Read the business press.

    Pros

The people doing the actual client service work were passionate about their work and were successful. The compensation was on par with market.

    Cons

The back office administration of the company was the tail the wagged the dog. The sales team will stab you in the back in a heartbeat if your work threatens their commission... Even if it is the best interest of the client.

Also, the offices are "no-frills". If you visit a SunGard Data Systems office, there is a receptionist for one. There are fresh Starbucks coffee machines, soft drinks and bright open workspaces. SunGard Availability Services offices are the opposite of that. Think Office Space without all the glitz and glamour. Cost cutting has taken away anything resembling good coffee and you are lucky to find a Keurig machine... even luckier to find one with pods. The only thing consistently available in these offices is pain reliever (no joke). Choose your favorite NSAID to try to make the pain of dealing with a company that stopped evolving in the 80's go away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not many people have dust on their resume's. Turnover, especially problematic above Sr. Manager is crippling to productivity and client relationships. Work harder to retain top talent!

    Pros

Some really nice people work there.

    Cons

General frustration overall in several departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't micromanage. It's anti-productive and discouraging for any employee. Empower them to be the adults that they are and let them feel like they know what they are doing.

    Pros

Great place to learn and get your foot in the door. Many different types of customers from simple all the up to insane. Good Benefits.

    Cons

Pride themselves on low salary, corporate re-orgs every year, only really work on the products offered (not a lot of custom work). No bonuses. Potentially lots and lots of nights and weekends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

reward people that go the extra mile, especially if the extra mile has become standard.
