I have been working at Sungevity full-time

    Pros

    - Great mission with co-founders and top-level management who truly care about the positive impact this company's making - Competitive salary, full benefits, positive culture, plus perks - Most managers are receptive to hearing what their direct reports have to say - If you're hard-working and smart, there's opportunity for advancement within the company as it grows - Lots of smart, friendly people who care about the work they're doing - Management is relatively transparent and strives to keep their employees updated on initiatives and company progress - The market potential of this industry is huge

    Cons

    - Some employees complain about the frequent changes, but this is a growth-stage company that requires iteration. If you're not comfortable rolling with the punches, this probably isn't the place for you. - There's a lot of silo-ing among teams/departments. People are more focused on getting things off of their desks, when they should be encouraged to think about how their actions (or lack thereof) impact other teams. It causes a lot of unnecessary double-work and inefficiency. More cross-departmental meetings/gatherings need to happen to keep people in the loop and make them comfortable enough to walk up to each other to discuss problems directly.

    Advice to Management

    - Keep hiring smart, passionate people - Help employees figure out what their best path for advancement is. I've heard several instances of HR discouraging employees from moving around, which is really shocking. The best companies retain talent by allowing smart people to grow their careers there. At the same time, don't keep people just for the sake of seniority if they're no longer contributing. - Do more to engage employees. Give them the opportunity to work on extra projects and contribute ideas. Otherwise, they're most likely going to get bored and disengage. In such a big company, roles are increasingly specialized and therefore monotonous. - Please get more software resources if possible

Great company to work for.. they give you a company car and they pay for your health care! Not to mention they have an amazing corporate culture.

    Cons

The biggest issue I saw is that things change alot. Within my 9 months there, I worked for three different managers.

    Pros

Sungevity is Sfun. People have good humor and keep each other energized. Cheezits in the kitchen.

    Cons

Things are always changing, but there is not enough follow-through. Too much micromanaging.

    Advice to Management

roll up your sleeves with us more - lead by that example so we are also empowered. Department heads don't talk to each other enough and it causes issues for their departments.

    Pros

Positive smart co-workers Nice office building

    Cons

12 hour days can be expected as well as working weekends in order to meet quota. You will not be paid for these extra hours. The pressure is intense and they are quick to fire people that can not meet their unreasonable expectations. There is zero respect for work life balance and while the mission is admirable not caring for their employees is not. I felt I had no choice but to quit due to the work conditions.

    Advice to Management

Respect the lives and health of your employees. If you demand extra hours from your workforce you should pay them. It is best to inspire your workforce and not threaten them.

    Pros

The mission of the company is admirable, the people on the front lines are top notch.

    Cons

Leadership is a complete embarrassment, no direction, no clue. You get the feeling "the emperor has no clothes" every time someone asks a question. Pressure to work more, more, more is constant. It's created by a totally inept leadership chain of command, most of which has never actually done the job they are attempting to direct. Any opinion other than, "yes, yes, yes" is pilloried as negative and swiftly ushered out of the building. It's a rudderless ship heading towards an iceberg with a drunken captain asleep at the wheel, without, and the first mate yelling steering commands from a lifeboat.

    Advice to Management

Get your resumes ready (I'm sure you already have) and get a real job, like the founder of the company just did.

I have been working at Sungevity full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to get started in Solar. Nice Oakland office.

    Cons

    - Churn and Burn environment in which staff is pushed very hard, contribute a lot, and then when the inevitable re-org happens (every six months or so), management looks at a spreadsheet for people to layoff. If you have added a lot of value over the years but a new executive sees you simply as a line item on a spreadsheet, your job is in danger. - A very sales and marketing oriented company. There is a constant flow of new ideas that come from sales and marketing, many of which are great ideas. But there is minimal attention given to operationalizing these ideas. Eventually when the new product is rolled out, the message come down to implement in a few weeks. This leads to inadequate tools to handle the new process, chaos, poor product quality, and much extra and inefficient work. Which leads to low morale. - Poor software department on the internal systems side. Software does a great job developing innovative customer facing solutions. But when it comes to systems to help internal processing, they do not have their act together.

    Advice to Management

Spend the money needed to create streamlined internal processes. Sungevity wants to be a high volume quality builder of custom residential solar systems, while providing great customer service. But the executive team and upper management do not seem to be willing to invest in building the back office tools needed to achieve this. You say that the staff is great and creative and will get the job done. Without the right tools, that is a cop-out for not building the systems that will make your vision of bringing solar to the masses a reality.

    I worked at Sungevity full-time

    Pros

There seems to be consensus that Sungevity is a holistic company that looks to improve everyone's lives and many at the company seem to be devoted to this mission and embrace environmental leanings more so than at other solar companies focused solely on profit

    Cons

Not much integration between company mission and leadership values, many sales people driven to feel like they are under-appreciated and treated like other less expertise-driven industries

    Advice to Management

Try to take in more opinions from employees and spread to marketing, involve less meaningless rotations of promotions and money give-away's for more meaningful help
