    A company in decline.

    Area Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsSunoco is an adequate employer if you desire to work in Philadelphia for an engineering centric organization ...otherwise, not so much.

ConsLow pay, incompetent or indifferent senior leadership, lack of business savvy, lack of a worthwhile vision, shrinking company, undervalued employees and assets,

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior leadership and the board of directors should be fired for what they have done to Sunoco and its stock owners. They destroyed a formerly proud and worthwhile organization. It seems clear that the named executive officers' motivations are to exercise the "change in control" clause in order to walk away with multi-million dollar severance packages. Lynn: Enjoy your ~ $38 million and congratulations, you've managed to ruin a 100+ year old American company.

ProsYou can keep the same job forever

ConsDead-end career wise. Refinery managers are very concerned about themselves and have no regard for those who work for them.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote people, if not with money, then with responsibility

    Senior IT Analyst (Current Employee)

ProsPeers are usually friendly and supportive

Consconstant downsizing-no direction-absence of any morale-generally depressing place to work

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at key job performers and promote them, not your old friends

Was a good place before the new management and the layoffs

    Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsWas a good place with family oriented mid and late career professionals.

ConsMassive cost cutting and many rounds of layoffs. Very unnerving.

Advice to Senior ManagementCost cutting and no frills environment will not attract career minded professionals.

    Downsizing, outsourcing, selling off divisions

    Information Technology (Former Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

Pros80 hours in 9 days work schedule.
Annual bonus based on company success.
Easy to commute to Center City Philadelphia
Fairly open communication from the CIO,
    Business casual dress.

    ConsNo opportunities for advancement
No training, conferences, books to maintain/enhance skills.
Re-org, downsizing, sales of divisions and outsourcing of IT loom over your head on a daily basis.
    Pension plan discontinued.
Annual bonus only when the company does well as a whole - and they haven't been lately.
Like to play the "Manager" shuffle, with no regard to competencies.
Mixed messages about the direction of the company from the CEO.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou do what you have to do to survive in a tough economy and an environment of changing demand. I suppose the days of treating people like "people" and not numbers are behind us. Hopefully Sunoco will survive.

Depending on who the CEO is you may not have a job. One Ceo will open more stores and the next CEO will close stores

    Store Manager (Former Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsSalary for managers is above average. Customers and employees are nice to work with.

ConsCompany does not care about the employees. Put a large number of stores up for sale 3 times
since the mid 80's putting 1200 to 1800 employees out of work at a time.Payed salary for 48 hours- work week is 55 to 65 hours per week. Store budget cut so low all the work can not be done and store starts falling apart.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart thinking about employees to. The Ceo should care about the employees as much as she is worried about money.

Sunoco - used to be a great place to work!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsI think the benefits are good; however, they recently stopped the pension program. We have a 9/80 schedule where you work 9 hour days and have every other Friday off. They will pay for education.

ConsNew management is causing turmoil within the company as there are too many changes in a short amount of time. The HR department does not promote or assist employees in finding upwardly mobile positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach.

Stressful if not used to refinery culture

    Supervisor (Former Employee)
    Phila, PA

ProsPay is good, benefits are adequate. Liberal time off policy. Fitness center on site. Competent medical staff (doctor and staff) on site. Very serious concerning safety.

ConsStressful for middle management. Employment treated almost as ownership. Poor work/life balance. "John Wayn-ish" culture. Mutual respect style management can be seen as sign of weakness. Old style management mindset.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore respect for middle management.
