Advice to Senior Management
Recruit general managers with clinical experience. Coordinators in Asssited living and Rem have the toughest jobs. Remember them when you are introducing yet another report you desperately need. This takes them away from the core business activity of care. Celebrate and use staff skills.People lose heart when you bring outside experts into the community and overlook the qualified staff you have.
Encourage staff not to work excessive hours. This is demoralising, unsafe and affects health. You will lose good staff.
Deal with the daily corporate bullying that is endemic in the organisation led the example of the most Senior HR person. This is destroying your business and costing you money.
I wanted to use my skills in dementia to improve the lives of seniors. A promise wa given that I could share some of my research with the US. This never materialised and I never got to use my skills so I have left to go to an organisation that has embraced them, We have achieved in less than two months full NHS support to roll out the findings of this research. Sunrise you missed out.
Pros
-Introduction into the Senior health community
-Opportunities for advancement
-Some paid holidays/vacation days
- A good vision for senior care
Cons
-Corporately owned
-No experience required in fields that desperately require it
-Poor Management
-Cuts corners everywhere they can
-Allows residents who don't belong in Assisted Living into the community (health, mental, and personal issues that the staff can't handle since they are not a hospital or skilled nursing facility.)
Advice to Senior Management
Look very closely at the people you have locally managing your communities. Especially your community marketing directors, ED's and nurses, I understand Sunrise has to fill empty apartments and that you do claim to offer a higher level or care, but be aware that there are people accepting residents who their Care Managers are unable to take of properly.
Also, realize that it's freakin impossible to serve meals, bus tables, and re set the dining room as a caregiver when we have 15 residents to take care of.
Pros
Rewarding to work with elderly .they really care about their residents there is a good quality
Of life there
Nice activities
Cons
Pay is significantly Lower than most other assisted living or nursing homes in the area
Holidays are required among managers no off shift differentials are offered
Advice to Senior Management
Employees need to feel appreciated as professionals with competitive pay wages and incentives
Increased communication from cooperate more training for née employees
Pros
Sunrise allows care to be individualized to the resident which gives you the personal satisfaction of doing for others.
Cons
With the downsizing, corporate support has been lowered so that the education of team members has suffered. Nursing support is at a low. This makes it difficult to keep up with changes being made in the corporation and in the patient centered care of the resident.
Advice to Senior Management
Sunrise should realize that they are not just a social model, but that give nursing care and give nursing support to their residents. They should give more hours for nursing support
Pros
The ethos behind the company is great, majority of the staff really care for the seniors and want them to be comfortable. The layout and decoration of the community (home) itself is excellent compared to other care homes in the UK.
Cons
Senior management at head office level don't seem to have a clue about what they are doing. They keep changing their minds about the structure of the HR department in the UK, they seem to make a decision depending on which way the wind is blowing on that day. They do not realise the stress and pressure it puts on staff who are at risk of losing their jobs. There does not seem to be any forward planning.
Advice to Senior Management
I'm not sure if they are cutting costs because they want to look more profitable to then sell on the homes in the UK but they are at risk of losing all the good staff they currently have because EVERYONE is fed up and is looking for new jobs away from Sunrise. Senior managers need to communicate better between themselves which in turn will improve communication down the chain.
