I worked at Sunsource full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Solid company with a vast supply of technically capable team members that are will to help you grow your business. lots of training offered, freedom to develop you territory without overly burdensome oversight.
    Very Ethical Company.

    Cons

Learning the different functional groups and the folks who have the knowledge to help you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase inside sales staff, create a new pay structure for inside sales staff that is tied to productivity and AM's growth, this would foster a tighter team relationship. Invest in a NEW POS SYSTEM!

I have been working at Sunsource full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Going in as an outside sales trainee, things looked very promising, but my view turned down-hill quickly.

    Cons

This company focuses only on the margins of each sale and not on the growth of the business. Zero priority placed in the growth of operations to support the ever-growing sales staff and constantly setting unobtainable goals for performance metrics in each department to limit salary growht

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get new management.

    Pros

The people that work are are generally good, besides a few bad apples in management

-there is zero room for growth
-pay is well below industry average for every position except sales
    -incompetent middle management
-poor work load to employee ratios

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and hire more people in general for as much as you pull in for a given year and growing you may need more employees

I worked at Sunsource full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Sunsource has a very friendly employee base, and a good corporate culture. People there all get along very well, and management has somewhat frequent employee gatherings (during office hours) that are enjoyable. I almost never took work home with me, and was rarely had to travel. Management was transparent and provided good feedback on employee performance, and did a good job informing employees on issues regarding strategy and HR.

    Cons

It is somewhat difficult to advance in certain positions unless you want to relocate. Sunsource is primarily a sales-based organization, so that's where the money is. Nonetheless, you can have a stable well-paying career here in almost any role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus. Sunsource's management seemed like they wanted to be everything to every one of their customers. The strategy works very well for stability, but will do little to foster growth except in cases of acquisition.

I have been working at Sunsource

    Pros

The individual contributors that work hard

    Cons

This company is very disconnected and is still operating with the "good old boy system" The goals they set are unattainable and overall company morale is non existent. All employees are over-worked and underpaid. Sunsource does not value it's people and will show you this by hiring frat boy college kids to do account management out of college. That's the future right there in their mind. All departments besides sales are inferior in the eyes of upper management. This company runs so lean that comparable companies with millions less in sales have about 500+ more employees. They do not invest if you or your career and expect you to be comfortable with where you are at for the next 30
    years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your support teams and spread the wealth around. It's hard to be innovative when all the good buddy-buddy managers have been there for 20 plus years. Pay your non sales employees more than a slave wage

I have been working at Sunsource full-time

    Pros

Good rank and file people to work with. The company's mid-level managers are so inept that it provides many opportunities for comic relief during the day.

    Cons

Senior management is oblivious to the bumbling ineffectiveness of their middle management pinheads. Corporate management is hell bent on hiring 'fresh' faces directly out of college, with the intent of molding them in their own image, only to see those fresh faces bolt after 12-24 months. Associates in any department other than sales are seen as inferior and insignificant. All departments except sales are understaffed and overworked, as well as assigned "WIGs" (wildly important goals) that are unattainable and beyond their scope of control anyway. Management sends out annual (anonymous) internal employee surveys that continuously receive negative feedback, then act surprised at the responses and call for 'team meetings' to determine what can be done to improve morale...then ignore the conclusions of those groups. They invest no money in new technology, choosing instead to prop up an extinct operating system and database.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice...they have proven that they won't listen anyway. They are Enron-esque ("the smartest guys in the room") and, if you don't believe it, just ask them. They will tell you how much smarter than you that they are. In their own minds, you can't tell them anything worthwhile.

I have been working at Sunsource

    Pros

Sunsource is one of the leading distributors in the Hydraulic Industry and serves as a full service resource for mobile, industrial MRO, and OEM markets. We have some of the best people in the industry that really care about doing a great job! Senior management is some of the best that I've ever worked around. They really care about their people!

    Cons

Communication sometime vague and although we have a great email system, sometimes things that need to communicated to lower level personnel, falls though the cracks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Fewer conference calls please!

    Cons

Employees pitted against one another, lackluster benefits, constant teleconferences, unprofessional office environments, people wasting time on facebook, management rolls out new initiatives every week, company software is old, employees not trusted, not liked by many suppliers, watch your back culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Block facebook, too many managers, let branches have more say so

I have been working at Sunsource

    Pros

Lots of long term employees. People come here, and stay because it's a great company
Those long term employees are willing to help the new folks with just about anything
Lots of corporate expertise, and it's easily accessible
    Above average commissions for sales
A million things to sell to a million different companies. Some truly great products that are the envy of the competition.

    Cons

All those products make for a severe learning curve. This will take a lot of commitment
For sales, the minimal car allowances are a joke.
401K contribution is low, although the fund performs very well
Target account program pays the managers, but not the salespersons who are responsible to grow the Targets. It's a weird, backwards program that upper management loves.

Note: The above average pay goes a long long way. In fact, most people just get over the details as soon as they get paid. Lets face it, if you're in sales, what do you really want? Commissions!! And, you can eventually make a whole lotta dough. Think $150-$200k and above. Far above for some.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More 401k contributions. We employees are sticking around, so that will go a long way. Other than that, please keep up the good work!
