    Scandinavian equities in NY

    Vice President (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsIf you are Swedish and want to work in NYC, it is highly recommended. They pay relatively well, you get great benefits (more European than typically American), and the atmosphere is no more or less intense than other firms. Given that Wall Street firms are contracting, smaller firms like Svenska Handelsbanken will have a better chance to compete, so going forward that should be a good thing for current and prospective employees of the firm.

ConsNon-Swedes are not treated equally. Swedish is the language of choice in the office and it's rude to those who do not speak the language. Management does not discourage this, and in fact most of the bosses do it regularly when they are in town. Management is also disorganized, and the turnover at the top and amongst the employees is worrisome.

Advice to Senior ManagementEither fully support the NY office or close it. Right now it seems to be an afterthought.

    Conservative & Lack of Change

    Derivatives Trader (Former Employee)
    Stockholm, Stockholm (Sweden)

ProsHandelsbanken is a bank with roots in the 19th century. This means that the company is stable, does not require state funding etc. People working here are intelligent or at the very least competent.

ConsThe derivatives trading division is reckless: arbitrageur gambling rather than market making. Management lack an understanding of change and what change can deliver to shareholders. The culture is extremely conservative with technology from 1994 in certain computers.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the organisational culture and deliver some variety to your employees.

Nice on paper ethos but in general not executed

    Manager (Former Employee)

ProsFlat structure with the ability to work independent. Work-life balance is good although at times this has to sacrificed. Good salary and associated benefits.

ConsVery little training and none existent leadership. Company is unclear on what market it wishes to be in and reacts as a problem occurs. Does not like success or personality in individuals.

Advice to Senior ManagementFormulate a clear market in your minds. Invest in the people and it will show benefits. Leadership is a real problem throughout from Manager to senior level. Try celebrating success!

Strong company culture with freedom and responsibility.

    Credit Analyst (Current Employee)
    Stockholm, Stockholm (Sweden)

ProsIf you like to take responsibility for yourself, your customers, and your employer, it's a great place to work. If you work hard, there are limitless opportunities.

ConsThe employer can be perceived as stingy, but is a result of the strong culture of holding on to cash and not having large expense accounts.

Great company with a lot of opportunities!!

    Financial Advisor (Former Employee)
    Stockholm, Stockholm (Sweden)

ProsOne of the big four banks in Sweden, a universal banking portfolio, is represented in a lot of countries.

ConsA lack of diversity regarding ethnical backgrounds. A lot of uneducated staff with no university degrees. A lack of mentorship in the beginning of the work, they simply expect you to learn everything buy your self.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive new graduates the opportunity to replace the dinosaurs with no education!

    Position as risk analyst

    Risk Analyst (Former Employee)
    Stockholm, Stockholm (Sweden)

ProsYou are able to switch positions inside the company. you plan a career path with HR so that you can reach your career goals.

Conshierarchy, old structure...low salaries compared to other banks. But good overall...slow moving culture...and very cost oriented...no fruit or coffee when there is bad times :D

Advice to Senior Managementtry to have more variable salaries for work that is connected to fund management...younger people in management positions. etc. etc.
